adzyvilla
Firstly, apologies for not posting my adventures from last week, but I considered it and felt that 6 shots for no birds wasn't really worth reporting. After an hour or so I gave it up and cut a few sticks instead, including one absolute beaut of a piece of Holly. They are all now safely stored in the shed to mature for a year or two. Fast forward to the present, and I have just returned from a far busier but ultimately disappointing foray. 14 degrees centigrade and light winds made for an unusual February Saturday, but i wasn't going to waste the opportunity. On the way over I saw quite a few pigeons about unlike previous weeks where barely a flash of grey was to be seen out on the fields or rooting around the roadsides, and pigeons seemed harder to come by than a box of winchester GBs. Getting to the roost wood, we put up a good hundred or so which had been hitting the recently sown rye crop which i am reliably informed is destined for the neighbouring estates AD plant. There were plenty to be seen in small flocks early on, and the flurry of shots from the lads already out in the surrounding woods promised a decent afternoon ahead. I started poorly, slashing wildly through a few skyscrapers and wasting a dozen cartridges for no return. But finally a lull where I didn't see a thing for half an hour or more, was bookended with 2 birds for two shots, the second bird (a stonking 40 yarder) marking a frenetic period where twos and threes came over the wood thick and fast, many tantalisingly out of my reach or cutting across behind me. I added 2 more to the bag for 10 or 11 shots, before the birds dried up again (at least for me, there were plenty of shots elsewhere). And so it remained whilst the sun slipped down towards the horizon and I decided that as nice an afternoon as it was, I'd had enough for the day. It was nice to see greater numbers, but my shooting wasn't at its best today. What will next week bring?
old'un
yes, I have put my poor performance down to the lack of pigeons to shoot at. Nice to hear they are staring to show a little more in certain areas and you got a bit of shooting, the ornithologist I spoke to not long ago said we should start to see bigger numbers returning towards the end of this month, lets hope so. adzyvilla
Yes old'un, its definitely a case of ring rust.... Weather turning a bit more seasonal next week might draw them into the woods too.
