Christmas Sandwiches - and why 'offensive'?

There is a thread on Money Saving Expert on "Christmas Sandwiches" https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6480921/christmas-sandwiches-2023-tastiest-best-value?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=forum&source=TWORG-FORUM

One of the first comments was "So offensive to many" which I found bafffling.  Why do people find it 'offensive'?

Is it because;

  • it's Christmas and Christian and they are of some other (or possibly no) religion?
  • many contain pork, which may not be allowed by some religions?
  • they contain meat - and vegans/vegetarians seem to find that 'offensive'?
  • it is two months until Christmas, so rather early (may be inappropriate, but 'offensive'?)

Maybe it's some other reason that I haven't thought of?  I genuinely can't see what is 'offensive' about Christmas sandwiches and traditional foods?

I'm not religious (loosely CoE Christian, but only attend church as duty calls for weddings and funerals), but I do feel that if you find our national custom of celebrating Christmas (we are after all a country with a 'national' religion, Cof E) and how we choose to celebrate - 'offensive' - then the UK probably isn't the right place for you.

By all means don't take part (as I don't in other religions festivals and celebrations, but I don't find them offensive), but don't claim to be 'offended'.

Mods: If this is too close to religion, please feel free to remove.

This I'd reckon. And that Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Christ and not about sandwiches, mince pies, turkey salad and all the rest that it has become. The same as Saint Stephen's Day has become hijacked as "Boxing Day". For which we can all blame Charles Dickens as it is 'im wot has done it.

  • it is two months until Christmas, so rather early (may be inappropriate, but 'offensive'?)
