You found some birds perched in trees at the edge of a wood, and they flew down to a nearby field. Unfortunately, when you approached them to scare them into flying (a common practice for birdwatchers), they spooked and flew away. You waited for them to return, but they didn't. This lack of birds in an area you usually find them in is puzzling. There could be many reasons why the birds weren't where you expected them.
