chrisjpainter
'Afternoon all, I've just made myself a walking stick out of Hazel and a roe antler for the thumb rest. One prong is significantly longer than the other. How feasible is it to shorten it off by a couple of inches and to then round off the top again? I'd rather leave it than make a mess of it, but if it's possible, it would probably save me accidentally taking my own eye out with it! Shambam1962
Easy enough to shorten, but if cutting a few inches off you will expose the core, and will have to cap it and round over, as photos below. Hope this helps 👍 Edited October 5 by Shambam1962
chrisjpainter
That's great, thanks. I had a feeling I would be exposing the core. I'll see how I find it for a few weeks first I think. I can always do it at a later date.

Use 2 part epoxy glue to fix 👍
chrisjpainter
That's very kind, thanks. It looks like it'd be about the size as the lower prong on the lower picture. We'll see how it goes over the next couple of weeks or so.

Use 2 part epoxy glue to fix 👍 As Shambam1962 rightly said use 2 part epoxy. What I now do as I inadvertently knocked one of the caps off, is drill a hole in the top of the antler and a small hole in the buffalo cap which hives a more secure joint for the epoxy, if that makes sense. Also, I make the caps slightly shallower in profile as my earlier ones being longer were more prone to being dislodged. Hope this helps. Once again Kevin shows his generosity and helpfulness.
