Vehicle crashes with deer cost £21m A Deer Vehicle Collisions project - the first study to centrally collect data on road accidents involving deer - has been launched.

It has been estimated that there are around 200 accidents a day involving deer, and the costs per vehicle, with an average insurance claim costing just £300, could reach as much as £60,000 per day across the UK. That’s over £21 million a year.

As many as 75,000 deer are thought to be hit by cars every year in the UK, the vast majority in England.

But, says Autonational Rescue, that statistic does not account for other animals that crawl off the road to suffer and die after being hit by cars and other vehicles. In addition, there is the human deaths and injuries that occur as a direct result of deer collisions.

Autonational Rescue has welcomed the launch of the project, which is being administered by The Deer Initiative and backed by the Highways Agency. Marketing manager Ronan Hart said: “Many motorists don’t realise that deer-related traffic accidents very often don’t kill the animal outright - which is bad enough - but they have to be either put down by rangers, vets or RSPCA staff afterwards or they escape to die later of their injuries. What’s more, especially at night in winter fog and rain, they are a major safety hazard to road users and lead to expensive damage to cars and human injuries and even deaths.

“Hopefully the study will also help to identify measures that can be used to try to reduce deer collisions, such as fencing, warning signs and the use of roadside reflectors.†(Autonational Rescue: November 19).

Should put down more opportunities for people to go out stalking to lower numbers. There is a hotspot on one stretch of road here in suffolk where there is an average of 2 accidents a week with deer. To date there has been 17 fatalities on this road alone. The local landowner on whose land they frequent (A local estate) refuses for them to be culled. Things are so bad Highways and Defra are involved and are going to enfore a cull.

I remembera few years back,

was coming home from work at around 4 in the morning or so,

came aronud a corner and there was a stag standing in the middle of the

road, still dont know how I managed to miss him. can happen so easilly.

conor came to grips with two of them not so long ago at the same time.

wouldn't like to hit one, imagine one of them in your wind screen kicking

like mad, more than likely kicking you.
