Hello,

I don't wish to derail your thread, but what was the purpose of these? Or was the intended use for the original article exactly as I'm imagining...

Ive just never seen one is all :)

Trench raids where the length of a rifle (as then issued) would be an encumberance. In his memoirs either Graves or Sassoon mention taping kitchen knives to short lengths of broom stale. Also a trench club would render hors de combat with little chance for its victim to cry out of taken unawares.
