London Best Posted Saturday at 09:35 Report Share Posted Saturday at 09:35 An old school friend of mine always used to pull his shotgun triggers with his middle finger. Teenager with no injuries/arthritis, he just shot that way. I asked him why and he said he pointed his index finger of his left hand at the bird under the fore-end and his index finger of his right hand also pointed at the bird alongside the action. It certainly worked for him as he was a helluva shot at pigeons and wildfowl.

But somehow it 'sounded' unhandy with a dpuble shotgun. I messed with it last night and was surprised it felt pretty natural. This was with an O/U, so am eager to try it, and the S/S! Earlier, I had this brainwave that maybe that sports bandage might work. But using the mid finger instead makes a lot more sense! Reading up on line about knarly fingers and double triggers, l had run accross the theory of pointing at the target with both index fingers, but felt at the skeptical stage re. The trigger hand! Thanks again to all. Wi keep you posted! Ps, l dont know if the round we shot was "Greenhorn stage one", But the clays were very slow. And couldnt seem to get my swing going! The rabbits were a bit better though! Best Rich.

He had certainly never fired a shot at a clay pigeon. And nobody had taught him to shoot. He just did it his way.

Well L-B, This was the first time in my life I went to a clay ground. I took both guns but my old HJ Hussey skinned me the worst. I picked it up this morning and middle finger seems to work, so will try it out! Never had any shooting lessons as a lad, but had a great respect for Percy Stanbury and always shot his way, to my satisfaction. Keep you posted! R. R. Same here, no lessons. Read the books, tried both Stanbury and Churchill methods. Now……I suppose I use I use a combination of both, depending on the shot presented. Certainly, on the very rare occasions when I shoot at clays, neither method seems to work! But the combination works very well for me at game of all kinds. These clays I tried L-B, were so slow they were about standing still and couldn't get my swing going. also no 'driven in what I thought there would be, yes, coming towards us, but flopped before they got overhead. also shooting through those windows to prevent you swinging your gun in an unsafe direction made it impossible to take an overhead shot. Same as you, its very different to live birds! Only the rabbit was a bit better and that worked ok. To be fair to the shooting grounds, they have all kinds of layouts so we were likely on the first level. I do think though that faster birds would have helped a great deal. all were slow poking shots. The sort that take a great deal of discipline to deal with, Successfully that is!
