Yesterday (Sat) I went out beating and we were finished by 3. I knew that heavy rain +wind was forecast for today so I came straight home and quickly got the kit +hounds together along with a bag of wheat and went to my local piece of ground. I shot another brace of pheasants and the dogs flushed about 10 others most of which I didn’t get a shot at.

One bird that I did shoot at folded up and came down about fifty yards out into the field. The two dogs were sent out to retrieve it. simple. The bird got up and ran at the speed of light with the two dogs in hot pursuit to the hedge. Somehow the bird eluded their attempt to grab it and it got away. We searched all along the hedge for it but it had disappeared. I have known pricked birds to take refuge down rabbit holes before. Dogs 2 >> pheasants 1 >> shooter disappointed, could do better. :good: At one point a heavy shower that lasted a couple of minutes came through and we took shelter behind a large tree. The dogs had a good time and we just got back to the car on near dark after scattering the wheat when the rain started to come down hard. When we got Back home the young dog looked like Black adders Dad when he came home from the wars. She was red all over with blood all over her shoulder and back. Both of them were wet and muddy so I bathed both dogs and found a small nick in the dog’s ear that by now had stopped bleeding. End of a nice day and the dogs settled down by the fire to dry off and warm up.:blush: and I settled down with a bowl of homemade soup and a thick slice of bread and butter.:lol:
