tommymcm
hi lads, i'm thinking of upgrading from 22lr to either 22 hornet or 222, any suggestions, rgds, tommy
njc110381
Depends what you're shooting, what ranges, do you reload etc. For most things the .223 seems to be the small calibre of choice. You can load a .223 down to be like a Hornet, but you can't load a Hornet up to be like a .
dunganick
.222 however i believe there was quite a long thread on this topic a few months back will try and dig it out for you

markbivvy
factory rifles avalible found what i wanted in the first shop reloading is difficult i have not reloaded long , but i find it easy to do for this rifle, and i have fingers like pork sausages. amunition over priced factory might be but i have never bought it. limited range with a poor BC and trajectory compared to the .222 mine is boringly accurate out to180 yds now the load is sorted. limited range of expanding projectiles and weight there of. never found this to be a problem as most of the triple two gear can be loaded into a hornet. mine does best with 40 grn blitzkings. my licensing department wont put vermin on my 223, thats the reason i have one. dunganick
fair enough, however if vermin was a condition they allowed would you have the .223 over the hornet? I know i would, and do When it comes to reloading you will find the hornet is a pain for run out and lube dents as well as actually getting a decent load. As to factory rifles there are just not that many, yes there are a hand full but not a patch on the .222 or .223 the max effective range is lacking by about 80 yards (min) on the .222 or .223 a range which i regually find i need. factory is expensive, however also not an issue as i handload for it. the range of expanding projectiles is rather limited, you either have a 40 or 45 grain lead nose from nosler, or sierra (or any number of manufacotrs) or you use the little 35grain b/t hornadys, think sierra make something similar too. There is a massive range of b/t and lead tip projectiles for the .224 which the .222 and .223 can take better advantage of. (responded to in no logical order as to cause confusion ) Edited January 8, 2008 by dunganick

Oly
As said, depends on intended use, but I would tend to order my choice; .223, .222 then Hornet
