Hi all,

just come back from the shops and as I pass the wheat and barleys fields I give the horn a toot if I think theres a few pigeons on them.

Well I did this a bout 20 mins ago and about 40-50 pigeons come off a green wheat field, this was in driving rain aswell which gave me a little surprise.

Having there feet on the wheat and barley must not put the pigeons off like it would a soaked field of mud.

Happy woody shooting,

Down this way ( Oxon ) pigeons are going bananas on the wheat. There's a lot of flat, and the barley is getting too hard for them now so they've moved off onto wheat. Keep your eyes on rape as well. Looked at 10 fields of winter rape which had gone very flat with recent winds and the pigeons have started to sniff round it already.

Harvest has started here too. I've got 3 farms who cut barley day before yesterday. Saw some very ripe wheat today also so I'm thinking things could be a little early this year....time will tell! I only hope there's not going to be too much food available for them.

Same here in Glos.. I dont normally shoot the stubble fields though until the last late summer fields are cut.

Walked a field of harvested Barley last night and shot a couple of Rabbits but there was very little spilled grain. As Eugene said in his post modern harvesting machinery is very, very efficient.

I think you have hit the nail on the head Will... There is just too much food about. around here we have loads of Rape starting to ripen off, laid Wheat and Barley and then the Stubble and then the Beechmast... Ive had some good bags in the Maize stubble in the past as well.

These pigeons dont have a bad life do they, its like having mackys, kfc, and burger king all on the same street and free of charge.

The only gamble is there might be a gun sat in the bushes.

I hope they are feeling hungry on saturday when I'm out with my silver pigeon.

Bye for now guys and good luck if your out this weekend.

Happy woody shooting

alrite guys, went out to the wheat field and parts of it are quite flat, there was so many pigeons on there, and they where spread out through the field, never had time of work, so got there about 2pm on sat and stayed for a couple of hours, had 15 at the end, i am hoping to take time off when it gets cutt, any way good shooting, bye

Went on laid wheat other day and shot 10 but they were impossible to find.

When we arrived there were 200+ birds that got up, but by the time we set up they had all b*gg*red off and we only shot at passing trade for the rest of the day. There's too much food about for the birds at the moment they dont want to go onto a suspicious looking field!!!

The good thing that comes out of this that if there is plenty of food then more pigeons will breed successfully and although this may be annoying for the farmer it will be better for the pigeon shooters.

If a closed season were used then i think that pigeon populations would increase as birds will be left to breed without interferance.

Another thing if your going onto ripe wheat wear wellies and waterproof trousers cos those husks itch like mad when there in your socks. This is especially irritating when trying to find birds in the wheat.
