Guest
Can anyone make or does anyone know of a good simple guide to getting a reasonable edge on a knife with a stone? I have an Opinel knife and a Henry Taylor stone. All the knife is used for is general pocket knife jobs like cutting string, cutting bits of greenery in hides, occasionally 'legging' rabbits and hares, not much more. This isn't an expensive knife, and I don't want to know the characteristics of the blade or intricate details etc. I just want a reasonable edge that I can maintain, not for gutting or filleting etc. Cheers, Sam Edited February 1, 2008 by Guest
loopy bunny blaster
opinels have high carbon blades and should be easy to sharpen using a good fine grit stone, 8 pushes away from you at a 25' angle as if you were trying to cut a small slice from the stone, then 8 alternate coming towards you until you have a good edge. then the blade should be stropped on the inside of a leather belt 25 times on each face to give the edge durrability, then one final swipe down fine ceramic rods or the top of a car windscreen to give the edge more bite. all the best Tom

What's the technique with the belt? And the Windscreen?
loopy bunny blaster
belt same angle as stone, 25 strokes on each side cutting edge trailing windscreen one light stroke from each end of the edge without moving the knife.
lurcherboy
Do a search for 'blade-tech' very cheap keyring attachment that does a fairly good job in 30 seconds. LB
Zapp
PM me if you dont want to bother with a stone, I will talk you through sharpening your opinel with a steel, and then stropping it if you want an extremely keen edge. It takes about 2 minutes to get a (genuinely) razor edge. If I can find a web friendly camera I will post the technique, it is easier to show than explain!
