Devon Fox
Hi Fellas, I have a website for my business, it was designed by a company that are no longer trading, i bought the domain name, which i have just recently renewed, the problem i have is that it is being hosted by prestonwebhosting.com who have changed ownership 2-3 times recently, that was arranged etc by the designer who is no longer trading gggrrrrr. I cant contact the host, tried all e mail options given, its due to be renewed anyday and i cant afford to lose it as its a very good source of income, how can i save or store the site?, will it just vanish with out a trace?, can i just sign up with a new hosting site and will they transfer it for me?, i am clueless? Thanks in advance for any help/advice offered! Mark My site is www.top-marks-som.com if anyone wants a nose! 19_Ferrets
get in touch directly with nominet or nic.uk they own all UK domains and if you comp, ain to them about ownership they can investigate and demm who the domain belongs too. ChrisNicholls
Do you have the log in details for the server with your existing host? If you do it would be a simple matter of going into the control panel and looking for something that says 'download files' or similar, that would give you a local copy of the files (on your machine) alternatively you could connect to the server via a ftp programme such as Filezilla it's free, and then download the files to your machine. Then take out new hosting with a reliable company, get them to transfer the domain in and upload the files with Filezilla. Your site will then be hosted with the new company and will show on the net just as soon as it is all transferred over to the new host. pin
If the site is simple, by which I mean no dynamic content (ASP/PHP/Frontpage) etc - then you can simple "scrape" it down from that host and upload it to another very easily. If there is dynamic content, scripting etc, then you can't without actually logging into the host via FTP/Frontpage (whatever it supports) and getting it that way. The Great Cornholio
I am no website techie, but I do have my own, self built, website. As far as I know there are some regulations regarding domain names. They cannot simply sell it off without trying to contact you! All I can advise at the moment, is to follow ChrisNicholls advise and get a new Host, who should be able to solve all your website problems. Take out new hosting with a reliable company, get them to transfer the domain in and upload the files with Filezilla. Your site will then be hosted with the new company and will show on the net just as soon as it is all transferred over to the new host. pin
The point is he doesn't have the files Are you sure the outfit's domain is "prestonwebhosting.com" ?
The Great Cornholio
I may have lost the plot... But If you go to a website that sells domain names. Type in your own web address. Where it says "taken" look under owner info. Unless it's hidden then you should be able to find you current host contact info.
petethegeek
Are you sure the outfit's domain is "prestonwebhosting.com" ? I think an 's' may have got lost somewhere along the way - maybe prestonswebhosting.com?
pin
Ok, there are no scripts in use and all the links are relative As a proof of concept mate I have mirrored your site to mine, have a look :- http://****-cat.com/top-marks-som.com Check it all works there and if it does all you need to do is get delegation of the domain, pick a new host, have them grab the domain and let me know were you want the files uploaded. Simple really Edit: Domain is registered via 123-reg.co.uk so all you'll need to do is prove you are the owner of the domain to them and they'll give you a login/password to their control panel. Once you have that sorted pick another hosting company and find out what you need to point the domain at, log into 123-reg.co.uk and make the changes there. Whilst DNS updates you can transfer the files up to the new host ready for when the delegation changes. Hardy
In terms of the domain name you'll be pleased to know its registered in your name so you can transfer it to any other host (registration details below). If you have some web space of your own from your internet provider (like BT or whoever you use) then you can just use this to host your site, although you may need to transfer the domain name to someone else. For the level of hosting you require someone like 1and1 or fasthosts (or dozens of other hosts) will do you something for under a fiver a month. As for your web content, its pretty much written in straight html with a bit of javascript behind it. This makes all the pages simple to capture (rightclick on the page, select view source then save the text file, change to extension from .txt to .htm & thats your web page!). You'll also need to capture the CSS file (www.top-marks-som.com/style.css) and the pictures which you can just right click on & save picture. From there its easy to piece togeather. If you dont have frontpage (yuk) or dreamweaver (nice but pricey) you can do the construction in something like http://www.nvu.com/ or http://asp.net/ Mike EDIT: Bah Pin beat me to it - must have been entering at the same time Registrant: Top Marks School of Motoring Domain name: TOP-MARKS-SOM.COM Administrative Contact: Technical Contact: Technical, PIPEX services@123-reg.co.uk Portland Street Beeston Nottingham, Nottinghamshire NG9 2LP UK +44.1159170000 Fax: +44.1158770213 Registration Service Provider: PIPEX Communications UK Ltd, services@123-reg.co.uk 08712 309525 08701 650437 (fax) http://www.123-reg.co.uk This company may be contacted for domain login/passwords, DNS/Nameserver changes, and general domain support questions. Devon Fox
Thanks guys, thanks hardy i know you mean well ....... but if you could remove details for me! Pin, i own the domain name etc, its just the hosting, so if i register with a new host you can switch it for me?, thats seriously kind of you, and very good of all of you for helping! Mark Any ideas for a host?, i really am without a clue! Edited February 26, 2008 by Hot-Shot
pin
Sure can, since it works now you might as well sign up with the new host first, get that all configured minus the domain. You can then put the content up at the new host, I can send you a zip of the site or upload it for you if you want, so that once the DNS switches it's all there and you don't have an outage. Let me know what you want to do mate.
Devon Fox
Thanks pin, i will sign up to host with 123 to keep it simple, will get back to you once i have done that!
Devon Fox
Which one of these options would be best for the site?, sorry to be a pain .... https://secure.onlineaccess.net/cart/servic...5c335a0827a34df
Teal
If it's just for that site you can get away with the cheapest option. Recommend hosting in UK though- to get listed in google's uk search results.
pin
Yep the cheapest will do you, nothing complicated on that site. Check out what your ISP offers, they will normally allow one domain per account, or you can redirect from your domain to your ISP provided free "homepage" service, which you are probably already paying for. The cheapest option outside that would be Fasthosts they are doing their "home" package for £3.99/month with if I am honest way more than you need.
