The Big Red Fox
Try not to let him know you have the gun with you, but let him think you will go home and get changed and grab the gun, it's a bit presumptious to turn up in the gear with the gun................ I find. foxsy
lurcherboy
Never turn up with gun in car. Well, only if hidden. Had a call from a farm recently that I was invited to call on and chat about the letter I had sent. We had tea and cakes and chewed the fat for 20 minutes or so. I bid my farewells and the farmer walked to the landie with me. I got in and wound me window down. He then asked me "have you your gun with you" I replied"no" Then he told me that had I presumed, I would have been 'bumped' My word not his. So, don't turn up ready to shoot C.M. Vermin Dropper
There have been a few threads on this subject, maybe a list of advice should be pinned up to help out the "newbie nolands"? well my two bobs worth is..... Knock doors, knock doors and knock more doors.... Dress smart, (shirt and trousers).... Take your "shooting CV" with you.... ( it should contain your Name, address, occupation etc, what services you offer, by what means of control you use, supply two references, and add any other services that may be of interest ie building work)....... Take BASC membership with you..... Be polite, introduce yourself, and ask if He would consider giving you the opportunity to shoot over his land. (as you offer him your CV ) . if you have seen large numbers of pigeons etc on his land point it out, and tell them if you shoot over any other local land. Tell him that you are a BASC member (if applicable) and that you are fully insured, and that obviously all livestock and boundaries would be fully respected. If they say no don't be pushy, just leave a copy of your CV, ( and one of your new cards from e-bay) and ask that they call you if they need any pest control carried out. Lastly.... DO NOT take your gun with you, if they say yes then great, say you will be in touch to arrange when you can shoot, if they want you to start straight away say you will go home to get your gear. Hope this helps someone anyway
P.Shuter
It's fine having 'business' cards, but unless it really is your business how can you offer a service. The first time (unless you are a real jammy dodger) Mr.Farmer calls you will not be able to attend, so where does that leave your service? This is how the so-called guides and clubs exist! They offer a true service using their clients and/or members!! So guys unless it's proper regular rough shooting (for cash) you are seeking, just go on the knocker on your day off, but only knock where the birds are feeding and make sure your all your equipment and shot gun is with you because you will look a right old chump when Mr. Farmer says "sure thing get out there and shoot some of the beggers now". Don't worry about getting 'one foot in the door' if you shoot a pile of pigeons the farmer will remember you and the next time you go there a knocking pigeon shooying will simply be a formality. That said, be prepared some days for a lot of knocking not least because some arsen wipen has been there before you maybe left a bottle of cheap hard stuff and pheasant feathers in the hedge bottom along with empty cases and his old magnit battery!!! HEY NOBODYS' PERFECT... BUT THE DAY TO SHOOT PIGEONS IS THE DAY THEY WANT TO BE ON THAT FIELD.
Vermin Dropper
P S, I have to disagree.... if you turn up with your gear you are more likely to get the knock back.. also if you offer a service, it doesn't mean you can be there in the next 5 minutes, although you should make sure you are there asap, anyone who can, isn't very busy and cant therefore be that good.....at least thats the way it is with any other service, and as I'm a Fire Fighter and work shifts, I can get out in the week which the Farmers/ Landowners seem to like. just another way to look at it...... :yp:
P.Shuter
Of course I don't mean turn up unannounced at the farmhouse door deek bag in hand with shot gun slip over your shoulder, have your equipment and gun stored descretly (should be anyway) in your vehicle - just in case you get the nod. And for sure, one man cannot offer a pest control service. But one man can find a good days pigeon or rabbit shooting.
P.Shuter
One man cannot offer a pest control service Sorry, I will just qualify that statement. I refer specifically to pigeon shooting and if the person offering the service is unable to attend a call out for two or three days, then its not a service, and worse, some other budding Archie Coates will have nipped in there using the same technique. Of course one man can offer a service.......... If you carry out a job or duty for someone else,.... It's a service. If you want to be as pedantic as to say a complete immediate service then no, you can't . If it makes you feel better don't offer a complete service, just offer "your services" as a vermin controller! :yp:
P.Shuter
Yes, your perfectly right Vermin Dropper!
Vermin Dropper
Also.... when you get permission to shoot FAC over land, you need written permission not just verbal, and unless you have an open licence the land has to be reported to and maybe checked by the local firearms department, when you get your application for your FAC you also receive a land shooters form to be filled in and signed by the landowner, My suggestion is to make copies of this form and get them signed by the landowners as you get the permission.
