coptleigh
After a recent visit to Pennsport to have a lesson on the clays, whilst visiting some relatives in Hampshire, my son wanted his own O/U 20 bore, so the other day I saw a one in a local dealers, it was a Baikal SST 20bore O/U multi choke, within the price range and had a shorter stock for a youth, just the job me thinks. The dealer told me that the selection for the barrels was done by pushing the trigger forward to select the top barrell, the it would revert back to normal after the gun was broken, As with mall Baikals, functional, hard wearing guns, but what swayed this for me was the stock and fore end, had a lovely figured piece of wood, bit of oil, it would be really nice. So the deal was done, upon getting it back home, snap caps in and lo and behold, not working correctly, trying to select the top barrell, didn't work, fired the bottom, then it fired both barrells, then back to one, so a major problem there. Had to take it back to the shop and get the purchase price back. My question is, do RFD not check the guns before they sell them, by the way they were selling this on behalf of someone! even so, you would think they would have checked it was working correctly, before putting on their 20%( or whatever) to sell to the public. The only positive is that my son did not know about it, I was going to suprise him, when he opened his slip on saturday morning when out shooting, he would have been really disappointed if he had been involved in this saga today. CEREALTHRILLER
Yes it's very disappointing when something you've just bought doesn't work correctly. At least you've learned a lesson - don't take anybodies word for it - check it for yourself. I assume you got your money back ok. Just keep searching and find the right gun for your son. Good luck. coptleigh
Yes we got a full refund, and in future I'll be taking the snap caps to make sure for myself that all is in working order. Cheers Alan
cappy0766
Snap caps are ok to check a gun with mechanical barrel changeover, but a lot, well.... most guns are recoil operated therefore snappers wont let you know if the gun is changing properly. You can of course try knocking the butt of the gun on the floor after the first dry fire with a snap cap to mimic the recoil but I wouldnt put all my faith in this method. Nothing is surer than checking a gun out for real, in the field. Good luck hunting buddy!
Cranfield
Good RFD's check and warranty all used guns they sell, even those they take on commission. Its unfortunate that there are still a few cowboys in the business, a lot less than in the 60's and 70's, but still too many. I hope you get your son a nice 20 bore sorted out. coptleigh
He already has a s/s 20 bore, he just fancied a o/u after using a one at the clays, so thought it might be a good idea to get him one, so he could use it on them along with the game for a change, will keep looking and see whats on offer. as for the snap caps, I didn't know about the recoil situation about changing the barrels, would be nice to hear from someone with a baikal about how it performs and the situation about pressing the single trigger forward to select the top barrel!! or not as the case was!!!!!! Chard
I'm not sure about the Baikal trigger barrel selection mechanism, but I have to agree with Cappy0766 about the peculiar results you can get with snap caps. They don't give a true idea about whether a gun is functioning right, as a lot of the cocking mechanisms are operated by recoil. When I got my Beretta, brand new, I put snap caps in and was horrified that the second barrel wouldn't work. Of course, it was the lack of recoil on firing the first barrel. I was about to go thundering back into the gun shop to complain, when the penny dropped Don't know whether this would be the case with your Baikal though. I would have thought that first barrel should fire OK, as that can't be operated by recoil
