anser2
You need to get into the woods before the pigeons. It sounds as though you were a bit late and when disturbed they found another wood.
Cranfield
You may have been too early, but today I saw pigeons dropping into a rape field at 5.30pm. I believe the weather is quite important for roost shooting and the best shoots seem to be on windy days. The birds want to come in quickly and the wind distorts the noise of the shots.
