Birdboy
Hi, Put in my FAC application 3 weeks ago and had my FEO visit yesterday, and also conducted a field walk as to where i will be shooting. Originally, i asked for a .22 and a .17HMR on my application, however, when i met with the FEO yesterday, he wasnt too keen to allow both as he felt they were very similar tools for the job. However, I then stated that i wanted a .223 instead of the HMR for distance foxes etc, and he has verbally agreed. There will be a restriction though that i will need to be accompanied/have a mentor for the .223 for a 'period' of time until the mentor is happy to write to the police to say i am safe on my own etc. Have any of you guys heard or had similar in the past and if so, how many times do you feel would be a minimum i shoot with the mentor before the letter goes in ? Obviously the answer is 'when im deemed safe', but i would hope that would be from day one. Any thoughts would be as always appreciated. Cheers Gaz
tulkyuk
Yes it is quite common to be asked to have amentor when centre fire rifles are involved - i am a mentor for a good friend, i know he is safe and will be doing his letter when 3 months is up. silver_fox
....they were very similar tools for the job. Gaz That phrase is familiar, you're not in Dorset by any chance?
Birdboy
Very close, Devon ! I got to say, D&C Police have been great. Thanks for the replies. Im guessing the FEO would be happy with around with the mentor writing in after 3 months, however, i suppose it depends on how much you have been shooting in those 3 months. Im assuming the FEO would be happy with maybe 6 outings ? and maybe not so much the time scale of how many moths or weeks. Ive held a SGC for 7 years so i would hope he would take this into account too. Cheers Gaz
njc110381
I wouldn't say how many times you've been out. Just get the rounds down the gun, as many as you can, and get the letter in after a couple of months. They will look at your ammo count, so it wouldn't hurt to have a couple of hundred bought in that time. You don't have to fire them all, just make sure you have your ammo limit in the safe at all times! I kept my mentor for about 3 months I think. I shot a lot and used a lot of ammo at the range. I managed to get my certificate opened for rimfires at the same time as the mentor was removed
sweepy
I live in the Essex area and I was told I have my mentor for a minimum of 12 months before they will consider removing restriction Sweepy
pavman
Same for me I am granted a variation to .17 HMR and .223 for fox, as i have time in on FAC air no probs with the HMR but mentor for .223, Plod have to be able to prove they take due care over such things and just letting you go with a 223 makes little sense, you can cut it down with a Rifle safety course
sweepy
I was also told if I do a DSC1 they will remove restriction straight away Sweepy
chunk
Just curious to know what you do if the police say you need a mentor, but you dont know anyone with the calibre. Do they appoint, or ask someone resonably close who you dont know? or do you need to try and find someone, or advertise in a gunshop say. I`m waiting for a variation with .223 on it. Nothings been said by the FEO and its just a case of waiting for it in the post now. Ive had .22 and HMR open conditions for a while now so i dont think i will have an unpleasant suprise. I shoot with my mate who is in the same situation as me having done everything in tandem since getting FAC`s. We had the odd situation of writing a competence report for each other to get open condition. Cheers Andy.
Devon Fox
I had a mentor when i appled many moons ago, anyone with firearms experience could help and guide, you do not need someone with the same caliber, i wanted 222 and got experience with a mate who used a 22 hornet, he was only there to observe and advise!
