Highlander Posted June 2, 2008 Report Share Posted June 2, 2008 (edited) Good place to find Woody at this time of year (especially when it's hot and dry) is around a water source. They like to hang out in trees surrounding ponds (cooler) and if the waters shallow they'll bathe as well as drink. You can decoy them with lofters and flyers. Also works with black stuff (crows, rooks etc in case you think I'm being racist) but best place for them is a cattle drinking trough. Teal Posted June 2, 2008 Report Share Posted June 2, 2008 It was a few years ago on the continent when I was fishing on a lake that I saw a lot of this. Most of the time the pigeons would merely leave a ripple presumably they had grabbed a quick drink. Sometimes they would apparently crash into the water and then with a lot of splashing take off, they would occasionally wait for a little bit on the water before making off, and we hoped that we would be able to catch one, but of course they did not hang about long enough. It happened so often that it must have been deliberate (going into the water) rather than just sneaking a drink on the go. Highlander Posted June 2, 2008 Report Share Posted June 2, 2008 I’ve had another though about this...Sand Grouse (African) will soak their breast feathers to carry water back (in some instances over very long distances) to their young. Maybe Woody also does this in hot weather (if only we had some!) Can’t really see it working as a way of getting rid of mites as anyone with chickens will confirm they’re (mites) bloody difficult to eradicate. IMO they’re drinking and/or cooling off.
