I recently purchased a 20 bore sbs

The only identification marks on it is the makers name

AGNEW & SON HIGH STREET COLCHESTER

It has birmingham proof marks but has not got a serial number at all .

The FEO has no problem with this as he inspected it at its last keepers address and told him to insert makers name as serial on his ticket. Which i have done also. I have googled the name and drawn a blank. Is there any way of tracing the guns heritage and history

The only Agnew and Son that I can find listed as a gunmaker is Agnew and Son, Exeter c.1900.

The name may well not have been a gunmaker, but rather an ironmonger (Hardwareman) who had guns made with his name on them. This would appear to be borne out by the Birmingham proof marks, if the gun had been made in Colchester, it would probably have been proofed in London, just down the road.

If this is the case, the chance of tracing the history is non-existant, there are no lists of Ironmongers of the UK!
