Dave-G
I'm curious about what crop is on some of my permissions but don't want to show the farmer my ignorance by asking. I rather hope some of you can help. The crop is between 2 and 3 feet tall with broad light green leaves. The "pen" size upper stems are just about square - and hollow! about a quarter of the way from the top there are clumps of white flowers with dark brown or black patches on them - and the base or bud that the petals came from have a pink hue. I can get a photo if need be, but hopefully the description will ring someones bell. Thanks in advance.

Baldrick
Dave, those are definitely beans you saw, and if they're on your permission, you're in for some good shooting as soon as the combine goes through in August. Beans are a bit of a sod to combine: you have to drive the combine at quite a lick (always a little unnerving in a £200k machine) to catch the beans before they are shaken out of their husks and wasted. Farmers achieved good prices for beans sold last year, so there were a lot more beans planted for the '08 harvest.
2shots
Beans mate and brilliant shooting when they harvest them, shot pigeons over them last year and they couldnt hardly fly thier crops were chocka full.
Dave-G
Thanks chaps - I'll maybe find a good high ground lay-up position just prior to the harvest then. Having a Google - it seems to preceed wheat. Is the stubble left before drilling for long so we can just drive over it as needed?
tabs
Dont they smell just great at this time. I watched a CWD uprooting a stack yesterday on a neighbouring field to one of my permissions. Got 5 fields on another farm im watching with baited breath , if the black ones dont hoover it up!
Baldrick
The contract farmers left the beans stubble for a matter of weeks before cultivating after the '07 harvest, but then they don't hang about.
