Sprinter
Out on the flattened barley again today, not altogether successful but i'll explain the best i can. On arrival a gas banger was in operation and the hide had fallen in (bales). Silenced the banger and rebuilt the hide. Set up the rotary and by the time i had got back to the hide it had stopped. Found it had wrapped some barley stalks around itself. Cleared that and went back to the hide. Here they come decoying lovely, hang on whats that, bloody dog walker 80 yards in front of the hide grr. Next lot in and they shied away just out of range, and the same again hmm. Peered over the hide and it would appear that the wind has unstuck the wings on one of the dead birds on the rotary. Out to fix that, get back in hide and a gust of wind deposits a bale on my back, just as i'm tucking into my sarnie. Watch another dog walker go by. Here come a few, straight in bang bang there go a few straight out here come a few, they shy away and the next lot, look over the top and the rotary had stopped with the wind blowing one of the birds almost inside out, not too natural. Fix that and back in. Nothing doing for quite a while, next lot in coming lovely BEEP BEEP BEEP , dirty great lorry reversing behind me flashing lights an all. Im about had enough now, so much for a nice quiet sit popping a few woodies. All quiet for a while, next lot coming straight at me, they seem a bit high, oh hang on its a Lancaster bomber, nice. Complete Battle of britain flight pass right over my hide, Lancaster Spitfire, Hurricane and Dakota. Lovely sight and sound. Then a pigeon straight in and straight dead, nice. Peer over the top on the hide and notice the rotary had stopped again, *** is going on today. Out for a look and spend 15 mins fiddling with it as pigeon seem to be queueing up to commit suicide above me, should have taken the gun out with me. Cant fix it, dismantle and use the arms as bouncers take the workings back to the hide. Fiddle with it on and off for half an hour before discovering a loose connection. Can't be bothered to take it back out again as i already seem to have spent more time out of the hide than in! There seem to be a few birds about now but they just arent decoying, or rather they are but they are too lazy to get to my pattern choosing to drop infuriatingly 60 ish yards out (wish i had my baikal with me). Just then a kestrel heads low straight at the hide and disappears from view, to reappear 2 foot from my face on top of the bale in front of me. Dunno who was more suprised, guess it was the bird as it crapped itself and i just ******....... After another quiet spell another familiar sight appears on the horizon, this time it's the Vulcan, not as close as the BOB flight but passes within half a mile or so, seems to fly so slowly for such a big thing. After this i decide i've had enough and it's time to repair to the pub. I put the gun in the slip and look up to see a pair of woodies landing in my kill zone, typical. Get down pull gun from slip fumble two carts up stand up clap my hands and clean miss both of them as they get up. oh well. Pack up and reset the banger. As im putting the kit in the car a skylark strikes up and seems very close but i can't see it. Eventually spot it sitting no more than 10 yards away and spend 5 mins watching it through the bins. Anyway not a total loss as i said. 1 woodie and saw a lot of thing i wouldn't have seen sat on my **** at home.
