Electric fence

Can any one tell me the hight of the top and bottom wire on an electric fence on the out side of a release pen and how the birds pass the fence by the pop holes?

Where we double wire it's usually about 4-5" and 9-10" high. Single wire is about 7-8" high.

 

We make no allowances for pop holes as the fence doesn't seem to affect feathered beasts.

When you say you single wire is there any need to double wire?

I always use double wire, for the cost (even for a large pen) the answer is YES. Some wild and domestic animals are clever when it comes to food.

We double wire where we feel there is a vulnerability, such as.....

 

Old pen with weak decayed wire or plastic netting (inherited).

Close proximity to members of the general populus, footpaths or houses. (always worth a third wire here 415v about **** height 2m from pen-JOKE!)

A significant number of birds in pen ie >400

 

from a cost/time perspective if we were building a new pen or refurbishing an existing one we would always double wire.

 

for an existing single wire pen with no real issues (middle of nowhere, good wire netting and well controlled reynard) it would ball-ache to convert to double wire as most of the posts would be well decayed/ too short and need replacing as well.

We have doubled the wire on our peasant pens (220 YARDS circumference)but only single on the partridge pens but these are only small (12x4x4)will post some pics after the weekend.

We always double. One at 100mm and one at 200 and set about 150mm out from the wire mesh.

Not saying its perfect but it works
