I cut a few sticks last season, and this is the first to get a bit of attention.

10 mins here and there:

cut to size

rasped and eventually 0000 wire wooled smooth

straightened (sort of) - I am still a trainee :good:

Taped & stained to top only - with coffee :P

ferrule from cartridge case, held in place with a pin (tapped home once varnishing complete)

4 coat of exterior satin varnish (0000 treatment between coats)

If it lasts the first drive of the first shoot day I will be really pleased :good:

That's a really nice looking stick, I've got a old hazel stick that I cut when I was about nine or ten, I didn't know anything back then and didn't season or straighten it. Thankfully it didn't crack (much) and it's straight enough. Im in the process of making a piece of antler to place ontop.

I was wondering what time of year should you cut the shanks?

Once again that's a very nice looking beaters stick.

That is a great piece of work Andy, well done.

I have only done a few, and used 0000 wire wool and oil to finish them, so I will interested to hear if the varnish cracks or not.

I will try oil next time ???

The stick lasted the season ;) (well it has just two more days to do - I reckon it will do that ok)

The varnish didn't crack - it came right off - and the coffee staining too - it was due to the extremely wet weather back in November (it took about a week for my jacket to dry out)

The coffee staining didn't soak into the wood one bit even though it was on the wood for about 4 months.

Oh well, looks like varnish is ok if the stick will only be used on dry days

The home made ferrule stood up to the mud really well

I got the job of STOP on one of the last days - which was great as I was left alone for half an hour in the corner of a wood and managed to cut myself 6 sticks (now drying in the garage) for the next batch.

Cheers
