well guys I have just been granted my FAC and would like everyones opinions the FLO was kind enough to grant me all that I asked for which included the following:

.17HMR

.22LR

.22-250

.308

what I want to know firstly

1:which rifles for which calibers

2: Which scopes for each caliber (in other words no point over mag)

3: Which moderators for each calibers

the thing I would like to point out this isn't a dream cabinet it's a realistic one on a reasonable budget ???

If I were starting anew and was looking to fill those slots (by spending the most efficiently), I'd pick up a pair of CZ's for the rimfires and probably tikka's for the centerfires. Both have very accurate reputations and are very competitively priced. Pick one that you like of each (rim or centerfire) to make sure you get on with it, then buy another of the same. That keeps differences down to a minimum and makes operation that much easier.

For the moderator, I'd probably have to go with a single mod for all of them, certainly for the 22-250 and the rimfires. I'm not sure if you can get interchangable baffles to go from .224" up to .308" so you might need a second one for the 308. The alternative is to buy one for the 308 and just deal with the fact that it is inefficient on the 22-250. Then pick up a SAK for the rimfires. Personally I'd say invest in two good fullbore moderators and use the same moderator from the 22-250 on the rimfires.

For scopes, it depends on what you plan to do with them and when. I have a similar ticket (22LR, HMR, 223, 30-06) so I'll tell you what I have and why. On the 22LR I have a 2.5-10x44 mil-dot. I shoot the 22 to 100yd or more, all during the day. The mildots are for holdovers. I wouldn't mind having a little more magnification for longer shooting at targets, but for <100yd on game it is more than adequate. I just sold my HMR, but it wore a 5-15x40. Similar situation to the 22. I push the HMR to 175 or so. If I were shooting more paper with it I'd have gone 20X, but for game I kept it on 10X most of the time while walking and cranked it to 15 when I laid down prone. On my 223 I have a 6-18x44. I use it for longer range varmints (150+ yards). I do often push it to 18X, especially if the target is past 200. If I were only foxing with the rifle I'd not put that big a scope on. That much magnification comes at the cost of either weight, clarity, or price. If I were home and it was a calling rifle I'd have gone 4-16 or even the 2.5-16 bushnell. On the 30-06 I have a 3-9 Leupold. It has been on the gun in the same set of mounts since the gun was brand new in the early 70's. My dad and I have a matching set of rifles (Rem 700 ADL) with the serial number off by 1. The scopes were the same until he upgraded his 3-9 up to a 4-16. I've shot deer with it out a long way. For woodlands deer out to 200 yards or so it is about perfect. Nice and compact (and light), plenty bright, more than enough magnification. If I were shooting open land deer I'd up to a 4-16 or similar.

In your case, if I were starting again with scopes, I'd put Mueller's on the rimfires and Bushnells on the centerfires. The elites series from Bushnell is the best value for money that you're going to find. The muellers are comparable, but not quite there, and are made for rimfires. You can go better scopes, but if you are looking to do it all at once that is a lot of money to shell out. So, I'd stick to the value for money gear (like the CZ's) and go with it.

Thanks

Rick

thanks Rick  you have just taken the words out of my mouth re the rifles! but I have been told that the remi 700 is better made? as for the mods interesting there is a preditor P8 from Wildcat with a conversion kit to the 22 250 so I am advised and Saks for the rimmi's is what I thought as for the scopes you definatly talk a lot of sense

??? thanks

Sacha

Any more for any more  all the advice is very welcome

I think Ricks post is spot on.

Everyone will say my rifle is better but for sheer value it has to be Tikka or Howa.

I am not that impressed with the build quality of the cheaper Remingtons and they will need another trigger or at least a trigger job. However if you go for the top end ones the build is far better but at a price.

A Sak for the CZ's and a 30 cal T8 for the centerfires and you are away. They will work good enough sound wise and will save a lot of mucking about. If you don't like th T8 go with the P8 and 2 sets of baffles.
