Muntjac in Lincolnshire

The last couple of weeks i am on vacation and enjoying every minute of it. Last week i have been to Lincolnshire with a group of friends. All of them from the same agricultural university i went to, and all of them (old) member of the student hunting "club". Two of them are still students.

We went to a friend of mine in Lincolnshire for primeraly pigeons and rabbits. I myself also went out for muntjac.

The beginning of the trip started bad as one of the cars broke down with gearbox problems and we had to get another car. So we were delayed 3 hours but still managed to get on the ferry without paying extra (thank you P&O).

Sunday was our first shooting day and it went really well, although hitting them was somewhat rusty we managed to get around a hunderd pigeons with 5 guns, divided over 3 hides. If you are in a hide with two people you shoot in turns. Shot about 400 carts :good: not bad but not good either. The other 3 days were likewise, we got between 20 or 30 pigeons per person per day. For dutch standards that is ok. No red letter days for us. We also got a few crows and other vermin like jackdaws etc..

But the icing on the cake was a muntjac for me.

I brought along a mobile high seat which i use regularly in the Netherlands for deerstalking and wild boar. I knew a few muntjac in the area but could not get to them. The muntjac walk between a few woods over small paths in the cover. My (cunning) plan was to put a high seat at one of the paths where the width of the wood is the smallest, so they are more likely to go over or cross the (grassy) path. Of course i discussed it first with my friend and also the gamekeeper.

Location was set and i cut some small trees to have a good shooting position. My location was in a sort of small V, so i could look up both ends the path. On the path where two barrels filled with pheasant food.

In the morning at 4 i stalked quietly to my high seat. After 1.5 hour of staring at brambles and a empty path i saw a rabbit and i was glad i finally saw something to keep me occupied. Would i have made the right choice?? Looked at the rabbit eating the grass, it came closer and ended up under my high seat. It then became more aware and i thought it might be because of it smelled me. Rabbit took of, i looked up and there was the muntjac, at the feeding barrel. Could have been there for a while, but i was too interested in the rabbit. :hmm:

Got my binoculairs, it was a male. Took the gun and aimed, muntjac went straight down.

I felt like the happy bunny. Not my first muntjac but i was pleased my plan worked out.

Enclose some pictures of a enjoyable trip.

This is the one i use. I have got a extension of the ladder with it as well. Is light, you can carry it easily. Can be build up by yourself in matter of 2-3 minutes. Ideal if you do not want other (anti hunting) people to notice where youre hunting from high seats as you only put them out when you actually go out.

Thats a good little design, do you know if you can get them in the UK? If not, now we're all 'european' :) whereabouts did you get it over there?

Yes, you can get them in the UK, exact same design as the german one. I saw it advertised in a magazine of a hunting shop. Cannot remember the name of the shop sorry. Maybe someone knows?

For a mainland order go to the website alljagd.de , then to Zubehör and then Pirsch und ansitz (it is an Alu hochsitz no. 1050480)
