Squab

I took the dogs out this morning and My Cocker Robbie who is an excellent squirrel dog ( Chases em to a tree and runs around the bottom barking like crazy)

was going berserk at the base of a tangled old oak tree which was covered in Ivy.

Expecting to see a furry criter descended from its colonial cousins in North America I quickly slipped a couple of cartridges into the 20 G. called the dog to heal and waited to for the blighter to make a move. There was a rustle in the Ivy and a fat fledgling Squab fell to my feet with a thud. It had fallen fom the nest in a fork about 12 feet higher and was trying to scramble back through the ivy when it lost its grip. The dog lunged forward and gave it a nasty suck and I rescued it from a death of drowning in Canine saliva cleaned it off and hoisted it back to its nest. From its age I would say it was still a good week off fledging proper and given that the incubaltion and fledging period of the Woodie is around 37 days these eggs were probably laid in early October. Just goes to show how adaptable these birds are in responding to mild weather cycles in their breeding habits. Robbie my cocker didnt go home empty jawed as I shot a lone Jay sneeking into cover from somebodies bird table. I wouldnt normally shoot these attractive birds but we do have hundreds around here and I thought it might replenish my Salmon fly materials. The milk man stopped me on the way back concerned that my dog had caught a parrot... I wonder if he knows what a cow looks like....:(
