Pellet drop

Guys, I and a friend was out on a shoot today, He has 2 Rapid 7’s, I am thinking of buying one off him THINKING, he wants a £450 for the gun, evolution silencer, 2 mags, a hard case and a cheap Simmons 4 x 40 scope (the gun seems to be in good nick, he had it in bits and says all insides are clean and good but i know where it has come from and i seem to think its had some stick). Bottles was full and he said that its bang on 12f/lb on his Chronograph but when shooting I could see my pellet, maybe it was due to the winter sun, but then at about 40 yards I think, (hard to tell) my shot was dropping and it looked like it was quite a lot. Is this normal, I can’t see it really as people are taking vermin out at 60+yrd with a rapid 7.

Still think I am going to stick with my AA S410k, but then had so much more fun being able to prune trees for hrs as hardly any quarry in sight! So we were still going at over 200 shots each.

Also I loved the safety on the Rapid; Hated the trigger, not over impressed with the mags and it was not at all quiet, loud infact.

The one on the left is what i was using and the one for sale.

All shots will drop its the nature of a rifle, all shots fire in an arc, the more power the less steep this arc will be. You will get pellet drop at this distance thats why you zero you rifle in to your desired shooting distance to compensate for it.

Are you saying your pellets drop every shot or this happens every so often?

I feel that the price is fair for what you are getting aslong as the gun is in reasonable condition, internaly seals are easy and cheap to replace so it should be ok if it has had some stick. As for 62 yards to shoot a bunny you should be getting closer and shooting it with one shot, airgunning is all about fieldcraft,I wouldnt like to shoot at over 50yds with my Rapid 7 Fac running at 30ftlbs or even using my Rimfire I would still try to get closer. As for seeing your pellet in the air this is quite normal if you have decent eyesight.

Seeing the pelet is often to do with the contrast of the light you are shooting in to. In some situations you will see most shots in others you will see no shots.

As for power it should drop bunnies at 50m with a head shot every time. 60m is possible I have seen a starling droped at 105m and a crow taken at 85m so it is possible but not responsible or reasonable to attempt.

I cant see it really as people are taking vermin out at 60+yrd with a rapid 7.

If anyone is taking anything out at 60 yd with a 12lb gun then they must be the best marksman in the Country, or even the World, and also have incredible luck as well.

I dont think 'normal' people could even regularly kill pigeons at 50 yds with a 12lb .22 gun.

They can hit targets at 50yds, but hitting the real thing is a little different.

60 yds to kill a rabbit is comical - it would have to hit it in an area of a 10p piece(how many people can do that on live animals? ),and even then it may not have enough energy left to kill.

Even top competition shooters miss the middle at 45 yards, so trying to hit a living creature, while it is wandering around eating at 60yds is just not practical.

From the many articles I have read, all say rabbits should not be shot at much above 35yards - the guns are just not powerful enough to regularly kill over that distance.

With a .177 12ftlbs HW77 I shot a hare in the head at 45m and the pellet came out the other side. That was some years ago I am not hugely in to air rifles any more but my brother in law brought his Theoben Countryman Carbine (.22) down a few weeks ago, he had just had it sent back to Theoben for servicing after 15 years. We took the old girl out for old time sake and were both droping rabbits at well over 40m in fact my last shot was 50m. Personaly I thought it was reasonable shooting but not exceptional.

As a 15 yearold Kid I could guarantee a head shot on a bunny at 50m With the Spring gun I mentiond above. Had I realised that this was anything out of the norm I might have given the FT shooting a whirl!!

guys, my post was for help and advice, not for a debate on the FACT of some of us have taken bunnys out at ranges you personally dont belive. I know it is poss. And the rabbit i shot at 62yrd was stood still, not moving an inch, this is the main reason i took the shot, being stood up high for 2 mins and still there! had to have a blast.

Maybe you mean feet?? You'd win every air rifle competition in the country, why don't you sign up for some?

Nah I mean Meters as in 3' - 3 4/10".

As I said I am not particularly in to Air rifles any more but as a Kid My M8 and I used to fire atleast 500 pelets each per weekend probably 95% of that was plinking at variouse ranges. it is the same as anything the more you practice the better you get.

Personaly I am of the opinion that until you can hit a 50p coin every time at 25 m you should not realy be shooting live game.
