mattslaptop247
Does anyone know where I can get a complete list of British proof marks. In particular I am trying to find out the date of a gun. It has crossed swords on it with B's on either side. Can anyone help?
ph5172
Sounds like a date code not a proof mark. Crossed swords Birmingham date code 1950-74, B at right and letter at left denoting year B=1951 C=1952 and so on inspectors number was usually underneath so proof dated 1951 the proof mark will be a crown with thick letters underneath Edited October 12, 2008 by ph5172
mattslaptop247
Yeah, under the swords is a number 1 meanin that the person that inspected it was the rank of senior I think
ph5172
Not to sure to be honest i just thought each 'proofer' was given a number a bit like the quality control now i may be wrong though WWhat other marks are on it?
mattslaptop247
Between the swords on each side there looks to be a "B", on the bottom is the "1" that you could see. There is a crown over BP, a crown over BV and a crown over NP. In a large diamond is a "12" over a small "c". The left barrel is marked as "13/1" and on the right is a "12". Both are marked as 2 1/2 for the chamber length, and 1 and 1/8 oz. They are also marked as nitro proof. On the actual barrels is "Made in England" , and the crown over "BP" interlaced. I just realised on the flat of the barrel appears to be a "k" but it has been stamped sideways. On the rib is "R. Robinson (gunmakers) Ltd. Hull". BV is the Birmingham View mark since 1904 BP is the Birmingham definitive nitro proof for all guns since 1904 is it BNP or def BP?
