deadeye Posted December 25, 2004 Report Share Posted December 25, 2004 i am from north carolina in the u.s.. i have extensively hunted dove (which would have to be somewhat similar to wood pigeon shooting), quail over pointing dogs, various waterfowl, and wild turkey. your sport of wood pigeon seems like it would be one hell of alot of fun. how could i as a foreigner with limited time get in on some quality pigeon shooting in the u.k.. i have traveled in england and even worked in the southern part of england for about a month way back around 1978 and really enjoy england and like the people. i am wondering if anyone would be interested in swapping a hunt--like maybe a southern wild turkey hunt for a british wood pigeon hunt. anyhow, nothing ventured nothing gained. merry christmas. email bulbs@bellsouth.net Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Cranfield Posted December 25, 2004 Report Share Posted December 25, 2004 Welcome, there are many professional Pigeon Guides in the UK and you can buy a day (or two) pigeon shooting. I believe the cost varies between the package you require and the time of year. The best time to make enquiries, is when you know you are coming to the UK. One major difference between our woodpigeon shooting and US dove shooting is, no seasons and no limits. I have shot doves in Georgia, Alabama and Florida, quail in Georgia and experienced turkey calling in Georgia, Louisiana and East Tennessee. deadeye Posted December 25, 2004 Author Report Share Posted December 25, 2004 attn cranfield, thanks for the info. how would i find a profession guide worth his salt. is there a directory. i own a business and have a family both of which take most of my time. i guess considering the complications of logistics, transportation, firearms regulations, etc. a professional guide service probably makes the most sense. also if i brought my wife over (and maybe daughter) they could do the tourist thing while i hunt, and after the hunt get beered up at the pub thereafter. if you can point me to some competent professionals where i could show up with my hunting clothes on and get in their vehicles and shoot their guns and use their blinds, decs, etc. any help is greatly appreciated. cranfield, how does a quality southern dove hunt in the u.s. compare to british wood pigeon. many thanks. The main difference I experienced, was that although most of my dove sessions were on private grounds, there were (on average) another ten guns within the area. I shot once on public grounds in Alabama and there were forty guns within a 100 acre area. In the UK, its unusual to even hear another pigeon shooter when you are out, unless you take a friend with you. Also, we don't have limits or seasons for wood pigeon. I remember one dove shoot in Georgia, when I shot my 12 bird limit in less than an hour. Dove shooting is more of a social ocassion than pigeon shooting, there always seems to be a cookout and a chance for socialising afterwards. I feel there is a lot more fieldcraft necessary in shooting wood pigeon, but if you were only allowed to shoot 12 a day, then I wonder if we would bother with the high tech decoys, hours spent in observation, subtle hide placements etc. In truth there is little comparison, but like most Sportsmen, I enjoy all the differences.
