The only spaniel I know of is my pals springer and it had constant with it`s ears. I however, have 2 springers, the oldest is now deaf, due only to age and gunshot, the youngest has "selective deafness" .

IMHO - If you check and groom your spaniel well then the chances are you won`t have many problems.

I have heard that this is a common trait in Sapniels...beit Cockers, King charles, Springers, because of the uber sensitive hairs in their ears, and becasue of the sheer amount of hair that hangs on the outside of the ear flap...they are prone to infections and this (untreated) can lead to serious infections and even deafness :good:

However, pups being born deaf is not something I've heard a lot of, a lot of people now as well as hip scoring do hearing tests at an early age in dog breeds they fear are affected by this problem, but this is not worth too much in itself as the dog's hearing develops all through it's life!

All in all if you go for a spaniel it's keeping the ears as clean as possible which is where the moeny's at...and also using a special style spaniel feed bowl can help with keeping gubbins and left over food out of their ears!

:good:
