.223 ammo

Recommended Posts

The reason I am looking for these specific loads is becuase I have a new Savage .223 Model 12 with 1:7 twist, using federal 55 grain loads the thing is shooting wild and it is back at the shop for testing. But Savage will only consider a claim for a faulty rifle if it is checked with Federal 69 grain Sirerra Match King BTHP, BUT the shop I purchased it from cannot find any!!! I phoned savage in the states and they say this is true, but once it is proved to shoot straight (1"-1 1/2" MOA at 100yards) I could try using the ammo listed in my first posting.

The shop said I will need to try loading my own (which I itend to do) but if you use any home loads it voids the warranty of the gun and I don't want to go down this road until the gun has been given the all clear using recomended factory loads.

How long have you had the rifle? surely your dealer is responsible for selling a rifle that only shoots ammo thats not readily available in the UK! I would contact trading standards.

I shoot a Remington SPS .223 1 in 9 twist shoots fine on Partizan and Federal.

sid i`ve just recently got the 223, the last rifle i bought of this fella was a 22mag but when i collected it he discovered he had no ammo, so the customer relations leaves alot to be desired.

It shoots the wincester fine, its just i was wondering what the run of the mill prices are for 223 ammo? part of the reason i went for 223 instead of 22/250 was the availability of cheap ammo for 223. Iam hearing its hard to get ex mililtary ammo now, is this true?

thanks

I have not bought military for years the cheapest stuff seems to be partizan £36 for 100 from Henry Kranks federal that I use for fox's is around £16 for 20.

I'm going down the reloading route myself I havent reloaded for some time and let my gear go, so i have been buying bits of reloading gear as its become available.

I have the same rifle and it shoots just about everything without any problems.

Partizan is about best stuff out there for the price, and you can reload the case afterwards. Kranks is usually best price around for Partizan.

One thing my rifle doesnt like is surplus ammo. I bought a couple of thousand Chinese rounds a while ago (the 7.62x39 from same factory was great) and only 1 in 3 would fire. When I measured everything up the rounds were quite a bit shorter than normal and as a result the firing pin was not hitting the primer with enough force to ignite it. I managed to swap them with a mate eventually, but it would have been a real ball-acher if I had been stuck with them.

I have reloaded Partizan cases using 69g Sierra MatchKings and can easily knock down ETR plates at 900yds at Sennybridge. I have also reloaded them with 40g Barnes Varminators and the result on foxes is best described as "spectacular"!

surely with a 55gn head in a 1 in 7 twist...it won't shoot that well,

plus if it's stainless it's gonna take 300 shots or so to remove some the newness of your lans,

so maybe try shooting some cheap ammo for a while and then a quick brush thru...

and then buy some heavier ammo... 69gn or above maybe even upto 80gn for a real tight group :hmm:
