Salop Matt
Guys going over the .22 vs 17hmr in my head and slowly starting to lean towards looking at the 17hmr for the longer shot, but is it right that much more than a breeze and a 17hmr isnt so acurate from 50yrds out to the limit ? If this is the case i will keep the .22 line of thinking. :look:
Lloyd90
I havent done any real tests but I know the 22 wont move AS MUCH as the 17! If its mega windy then both are going to move if were being realistic, I think the biggest decided between 22 or 17 is cost. Pack fo 50 22 = £2.50. Pack of 50 17HMR = £10-13 depending on where you are This really helped me decide lol :look:
Salop Matt
I will only really be shooting what i can eat so 2 bunnys and am good, if am cooking bunnys for more it may only be twice or 3 times a year so the ammo isnt a issue but in large open areas where the wind picks up i dont want the wind affecting my shot so much. But if i Give the crows a bashing the range of the .17hmr would be great as meat damage is no worry. I really need to find someone to take me out with a .22 a good few times so I get a better idea of range, stopping power, damage and accuricy , or someone with a 17hmr. While the bullet may by half the weight, it is also going twice as fast. The less time it is in the air, the less time that wind will be able to act on it. Depending on which 22 bullet you're using, you can expect anywhere from 5-7" of drift in a 10 mph crosswind at 100 yards. The HMR will be half that, or around 3-3.5". You can calculate it on a ballistics calculator, look it up on the various sites around the net that have already done it for you, or you can check it in the field. I've done all three, and all three confirm what I've said above. Salop, If you're only going to be shooting it a few times per year, then hands down the HMR wins. More effective range, more killing power at range. Thanks, Rick
cleaner4hire
once you start on all these crows with that hmr, you wont want to stop!!!

Not wanting to get into an arguement with you though mate just could swear thats what I have read somewhere oh well, I doubt the difference is even that noticeable
casts_by_fly
thug, you'll read it a lot of places. A lot of people say that the 17 calibers (centerfires included) will get blown all over the place in the wind because they are such tiny bullets. But what they lack in weight and BC they make up in speed. Yes, it is a noticable difference between the HMR and 22LR at 100 yards. With the HMR you can still hold on fur and make the kill (for hares at least) with the 22 you have to hold off. Thanks, Rick

I sold the HMR a few months ago and still have the 22LR. I'm replacing the HMR with a 17 AH. Thanks, Rick
