Re your last post. It will only damage it if it's left to work it's way into the wood. As you wiped it off (Hopefully all of it) and I assume it is a modern gun with sealed wood, it should be fine.

 

By the way - I totally agree with the barrels down theory, saves the oil seeping through the firing pin holes and attacking the stock from within. Soggy wood = weak wood
