millo2
There was a rubbish harvest of sloes where i live this year, can you buy frozen ones and do they work as well
fishandshoot
never seen them in the shops, but cultivated damsons work just as well. The blackthorn bush is easy to grow, just take a few small branches and plant it, it will root.
millo2
haha i live in the middle of newcastle at the moment mate at uni, not much room for a blackthorn tree in my living room Might plant one in my back garden when I get home Can you buy damsons from supermarkets etc
fishandshoot
I studied Engineering at Leicester, we used to grow things in our digs Try local markets, best for damsons when in season..

Tory Boy
Hubertus The old recipes really are the best. Sloe/Damson/Raspberry Gin/Vodka are just the best cheap yet rewarding liqeurs you can drink. A liquer that you make yourself just tastes so much better. Millomite When you find some good Sloes, just pick them and freeze them if you gather them before the first frost. However they can be frozen indefinitely if you get a good harvest. Don't think you can get them in the supermarkets, never seen them. Damsons can normally only be bought in season. Made my first batch of Sloe Gin some years ago and made 1 gallon. No way did it last any longer than six months! I just can't seem to find enough fruit! TB
millo2
Ah well, all this talk of sloe gin etc is making my mouth water and I wanted to make some
Hammergun
I made one gallon of sloe gin this year, and also bullace gin. Plenty of sloes round here, but I think a late frost in some areas destroyed the blossoms.
white fox
Given a tip today by a beater on our shoot (52 pheasant today) Take the used sloes and pop them into some still cider, any alcohol and remaining sloe juices make their way into the cider, couple of days later ready for drinking. He thoroughly recommends it. I will try it as my used sloes are in the freezer (I was going to remove pips and then cover each in chocolate). Anyone else tried this?
