Reloading Shotgun Shells

Recommended Posts

Hi

With the increasing cost of ammo I have been considering reloading shotgun shells. I know very little about the subject apart from what I have managed to find on American sites where it seems to be common practice and also considerably cheaper.

I stumbled across a site the seems to be based in the Uk called Midway UK which offers all the necessaries for reloading cartridges but when I had a look at what they were charging for lead shot it was more to buy that (let alone including the primers and wads) than to buy the shells as I do (Eley Firsts Fibre 28g and Eley Pigeon Fibre 32g)

Am I missing something or have I perhaps found an expensive supplier? Am I better just buying new than reloading? Any hints or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

GEd

Loaders do it as a hobby, for the pleasure of making something work, and trying out variations.

With automated machine filling cartridges, and components bought by the million and the ton, manufacturers are able to chuck out finished cartridges below the cost of buying the components in small quantities.

Loading your own is a bit like trying to save money assembling a car from parts. Add up every spare needed for your family car and it will be way more than the assembled car on the road.

Even if you recycle cases, and make your own shot, by the time you have bought the loading press, scales, and shotmaker, you will have to load an awful lot of cartridges before you start seeing a saving.

I reload 12g as I use a Hushpower & cannot buy subsonics to suit me but economic : No! I also reload .410 & thats worthwhile. Cost of components, especially lead shot is prohibitive. I did (still do now & again) make lead shot but could not make heavier than 6.5-7 size reliably. If you search for posts by "Floating Chamber" you will find a wealth of information
