TheHunter
John, what would you say your average range is?
casts_by_fly
john, Chris pretty much gave you the rundown. If you're shooting 300 yards or less, there isn't much difference. At 3800 and 3300 for 40 and 55 gr v-maxes, the differences are minimal. The 40's will give you an extra 25 yards of MPBR (275 vs 300) assuming a 5" kill zone, but the 55's will drift an inch less (both bullets you'll have to adjust for wind at 300). The 55's will have a bit more energy, but both will have enough to do the job. If you are shooting 300 yards or less, I'd pick the one that you're gun shoots better. If both equal, I'd pick the 55's. If you're reaching out any further, then the 55's will win hands down. Just another 100 yards down range that 1" windage difference turns into 3", and that is only with a 10 mph wind. Since you're asking about wind specifically, I'm going to assume that you're dealing with a bit more than that. If your gun likes the 55's, then go for it. My gun likes 40's and I don't shoot more than 300 yards, thus why I have 4 boxes of 40's in the cabinet and a box of 35's. I'm going to pick up some 52 a-maxes when I'm home for christmas just to see how they shoot. Thanks, Rick

Dead-Eyed Duck
Hi John I compromised on the 50g V max some time ago, and all I can say is that they work OK for me in my Sako Don

casts_by_fly
john, The 35's are v-maxes. I'm running a 223. They are designed as a hornet bullet, but a fair number of guys on another forum I frequent have run them through 223's and 22-250's to good accuracy. They have the BC of a brick flying sideways and will be sub 200 yard rounds, but for rabbits and general vermin in close they will be good for reduced loads in the 223. I'm planning to load them down to 22 mag or hornet velocities. Now if we just had some sunlight in the evenings to work with. TheHunter
Fister, where are you getting the Barnes bullets from? I was told GMK only use a few dealers! anywhere near Lincoln?
casts_by_fly
I have been playing around with the same thing CBF, I was using Barnes varmint grenades, 36gr with 11gr of blue dot in my 22 br to give me 17hmr numbers without the ****ness. If you can find cheap sierra bullets and get the hornet ones for reliable expansion, you can run this combo cheaper than 17hmr with better consistency, accuracy and no problems with fouling. Chris, That's about what I was looking for with the 35's. Only reason I haven't tried it yet was because when I had the time to play, the shop didn't have any blue dot. Now that I have time to load, there is no (daylight) time to shoot. Once spring rolls around I'll try them out. At the same time though, I'll have a 17 AH to replace the HMR. The little 20 gr bullet moving 1200 fps faster than an HMR gives +/- 1/2" out to nearly 200 yards. That's tough to argue with.
