Malinois
Hi, my firearms dept said they would not reccomend a .17 for fox control and would rather give me authority for another gun so I went for a 22-250 and a 6.5 x 55 for deer. They have stipulated I can use the 6.5 x 55 for fox when out stalking. However, 10 years ago whe I had a .308 they stipulated on my licence that if I loaded rounds under 100 grains I could use it for fox control. Do you think I could get the same stipulation for the 6.5 x 55? Any useful info to help my case. Thanks Ian Edited January 21, 2009 by Malinois
Cushat
Where are you? You should be able to get the 6.5 for fox without the "when out stalking" caveat without need for stipulating < 100 grains. Worth a call to your local firearms dept to check it out - but they may then ask why you want the 22-250 if you're only going to use one calibre for everything. Malinois
Hi, I have no problem dropping the 22-250. Having a jack of all trades will save me a few quid and I suppose I could play into their hands and site safety by not having to carry 2 rifles and leave one in the car if shooting should follow on into the night with lamping. I am in North Yorks area. Ian
Baldrick
I would definitely keep the .22-250. It is a superb foxing round, a simple point and shoot. I too had a 6.5x55, but its trajectory wasn't great for foxing, and those hefty bullets don't break up with ease inside Charlie. Home Office guidance states that the 6.5x55 is dual purpose. I never had any specific condition for foxes only when out after deer.
njc110381
I'm not even sure what my conditions say at the moment! At one time or another I have had Fox and Deer as a condition on my 6.5x55, so it is possible. According to the guidelines it is acceptable to have it just for Fox. I suggest that you tell them you often need to lamp Fox after a stalk. As your conditions are at present you need to take two guns and provide security for the one not in use which isn't practical in the area you shoot. If you make it out to be a big security issue that you are worried about they should do as you ask without question, as firearm security and safety is their number one priority
Dunkield
As stated, it is regarded as a dual purpose round, so you can have foxes as as a seperate condition, without the 'while stalking' restriction.
