Newbee HELP.....!,

Ok please guys bare with me......im still frigile and not fully broken in!

I have juts got shooting permission on some land close to where i live! I was chuffed to bits as a completly 'winged it' but i think the only reason he gave me it was because on one of the fields crow was hammering it and the one otherfields pigeons were having a party! As Soon as i walked up to the bushes they just took off! (and laughed on the way)

I want to get things right rather then winging it all the time so i would LOVE all your advice!? I am going back Friday as i have a day off work! Woop Woop

1, Decoying = iv looked at pattens but they all seem to suggest shooting with a shotgun rather then a sub 12ft lb rifle (BSA lighting XL springer). Will pigeon land next to decoys long enough for you to take a shot?

2, Flight Path = the land i have shooting permission over has just small shrubs and small bushes without any great big tree's etc. I dont know what it ment by implying arranging your decoys within the flight path

3, Hides = I was laid in the shrubs pretty much covered, the decoys was facing the wind 5x of them just dotted around 20 yards from where i was hiding!! Do i need lots and lots of camo? Or a little camo three man tent ......what kind of hide is best?

4, Targets = suggestions have been made to suggest in order to be effective at shooting you will need to be able to shoot 5 shots withing the diameter of a 2p all the time at 35-40 yards?? I set a 2p out at 35 Yards (with a 3-9x40 scope) is this right?

5, Collecting shot birds = When i shoot pigeon the other will fly off (right?) and then do i go and collect it or leave it there? Will the pigeons returns if its still there? or do i come out of hide?

Ok im sorry ill stop now i know it might be a bit over the top and many post may have some of the answers but just with reference to shooting with a rifle not a shotgun. Also are all rifles out of the box much less then 12 ft lbs??? AHHH to many questions.

Thanks in advance everyone!

Bottom line is you must be accurate with your kit :good: Make sure the pellets are liked buy your rifle as each rifle likes different pellets.. You can use a hide, i do, you can use decoys with a dead critter.. That works very well.. Set up a murder of deeks near, but not over a dead critter that was picked up off the road.. It works and we use it on Coyotes here across the pond.. :good:

Take some time to look around the Forum and post your questions in the approprite sections.

We have an Airgunners section and that is full of good advice.

suprised you have not had better replies my friend.

sound's like you really need a shotgun to be honest,so i would apply straight away for shotgun certificate and buy a safe.

you will need a hide with out doubt and when you shoot them you leave them till your day is done "thats if you have killed them" if you have not you need to run out and bust its neck "never take a shot unless you are sure it is going were you want", hitting in body with airgun is not acceptable unless fac rated.

accuracy as stated is every thing,i have the bsa lightning and i would advise you dont buy the tactical as the silencer is rubbish, you can buy it remove the silencer then get it re crowned and add a hw silencer.

few things may have scared the pigeons, heavy feet,to much noise, lack off camo.

a hide or just a few sticks with a camo netting blocking there view to you is the cheapest and 1st option you should think of,then decoys.

you are not going to put a dent in with a airgun,i will tell you that now and thats why i said you need shotgun for this.

targets,

if your a new shot with airgun then 25 yard should be your max and you should be able to place every pellet with in a 2 pound coin " you may get a odd flier",but you need to find out what pellets you gun likes, all my bsas like aa 4.52 but my 22 bsas like the cheap wasps.

at nearly 10 quid a tub of aas it is expensive in my opinion so try cheaper brands and see what pellets pull the tightest groups.

another thing, people will dis agree but once you get a better shot you can shoot a lot further with the 177 so i recommend you buy a 177 rifle.

yes pigeons will settle long enough for you to get a shot providing you move silently.

flight path is the route they fly from field to field,so look into the sky and see were they are fly from and to and place your decoys with in view of the flight path.

which hide is best?

depends on how many of you are shooting but a 12 foot or bigger netting in front of some bush's works well,if you are planning on sitting in the middle of the field a tent that fits you and who ever shoots with you in would be ideal or wrap the netting completely around you,"obviously with posts holding it upto create a triangle shape around you".

any distance you shoot you will need to hit with in a 2 pound coin or a 2p coin as you suggest as that is what size some of your victims heads are.

i recommend you stay at 25 till your confident shot,3-9x40 is most common scope and scopes is a completely different subject you need to learn about too.

hope ive helped you out a bit,oh pigeon burgers are nice too so dont waste them
