Out in the snow

We went out yesterday to a farm where the farmer's wife had rang saying she could not sleep with the racket of the 300-400 rooks/jackdaws flying about the barns. We arrived just after first light and drove up 300+ blackies.

I set up in and around the seed barns and my mate 1 eye jack (new PW member) set up out in the field behind the barns. After about 2hours we had only shot 11 so we picked up and went drive abouts to find a load of them sitting up on a sess pit at the top of a field.

I went door knocking and got permission to shoot there and found out it was an abbatior's dumping ground for all the dead sheep/lambs guts. It absolutely STUNK. We gave it a couple of hours but the rooks just were not landing anywhere near to the spot and most of the shot ones were flying high.

We then decided to go mooching for foxes as it was starting to get dark and after walking and calling over 3 fields we crossed the road and I flashed the lamp at the first field (over the gateway) and there was "Basil" sitting in a dip about 200 yards away.

1 eye whips out the jeep and climbs over the fence into the field and lies prone on the floor. I whispers " are you ready" and with a nod , I flicked on the lamp and Whack!! i heard the hit and off he trots in the snow to pick up the vixen.

No more in those fields so we drives off to another farm and walks 2 more very large ; snow-covered fields but with the crunching under foot and a full moon now appeared we packed up and drove back past the field where the fox was shot. I stopped the jeep for another quick flash and ****** me ; there about 150 yards out was another fox.

We got out the jeep and quickly set up; flicks the lamp on but he has gone. Called for a while but to no avail. There for another night.
