Chiller Units

A friend is building a larder for our deer carcasses and we're looking for a chiller unit which is capable of keeping the larder cool. It would need to be single phase (240V) and the larder won't be massive - probably 1.5m square or so (he's the builder so not sure what exact dimensions he has in mind).

 

Anyone any tips for a good value unit?

Hubbard seems a brand name or there is the likes of item 280317452843 or 270351532610

 

also try dropping the d from refrigeration and it brings up a few, there is also a section for restaurant refrigeration thats worth a look

Before you go any further and waste your money a couple of points.

 

In order to select a unit or system suitable for a cold room you need the following:

 

Internal dimensions of room.

Thickness of insulation and type (polystyrene, celluar, foam injected)

Insulated floor or floorless.

Temperature to run at.

If 0oC you will then need a system capable of electric or hot gas defrost.

 

From the information above you can then calculate the duty required to maintain a given temperature expressed in watts or btu's, then equipment can be selected to do the job required.

 

You would be better off looking for a monoblock packaged system that way it is all self contained, if you go seperates you will need a condensing unit matched to an evaporator, control panel as well as ancillaries.

I'm using a secondhand drinks chiller unit. The sort you see in the cornershop full of beer and stuff with doubleglazed glass doors.

That has the capability to chill four fallow carcases down to 3C so its well under the 7C limit.

Bought a digital temperature guage from Maplin

However, before you rush out and buy one, they aren't well insulated so it chews up the electricity.

 

On the plus side, the internal surfaces are wipe clean and there is room for hooks and drip trays.

When I get round to it, I want to buy and fit some foam insultation panels to the back and sides.

 

I picked mine up cheap from a shop that was closing down, twenty quid to take away.

This is a route i've been looking into now - interesting you can get 4 fallow in one as it's mostly all roe with the occasional red we have. Getting 4 roe in one might just do us and there's some cheap ones to be had on fleebay (though not as cheap as yours!) so two would get us 8 chilled down.

 

Building a reasonably well insulated easy clean larder and putting a drinks chiller inside could be a solution.

At the end of the day, as long as the heat exchanger is outside the chilled area, the actual volume is no problem other than the bigger it gets, the longer it takes to chill down.

The chiller I've got has a slot cut into the roof which blows the cold air down into the unit just inside the door. All of the electrics etc are sitting on the roof.

I'm thinking that, if you built an insulated room using 2 inch foam insulation board and bolted the chiller units working bits on the top, you might get the chiller you need.
