The Sniper
Browning, I've used a Gerber knife sharpener for the past few years. Simplicity itself to use. If you want to have a look at one, go to www.militarykit.com They are about £4.00. They are very portable and come with fine and coarse stones on them. They will give you a very serviceable edge, although not as good as the Lansky system, I have, which does the business for me, if you want that really sharp edge. The Gerber will give you a good edge, out in the field, every time.
dunganick
i too use a gerber, it protects your fingers, so is quite a good design
ChrisNicholls
I use a piece of Arkansas stone, it's only small but does the job exceptionally well, the trick with a stone is to use the same number of strokes on each side of the blade, what I do is make 3 strokes on one side then turn it over and make 3 strokes on the other side, turn it over and make 2 strokes, then 2 strokes on the other side and so on till you make 1 stroke on each side, for a real good edge finish off on the back side of an old leather belt, like the old barbers used to with a cut throat razor, you can then dry shave the hairs off your arm with it, if you can't, it ain't sharp. Wookie
I use one of the Gerber things. Love it and my fingers will attest to the sharpness of the blade it produces! Wookie

Sounds like the way to go but a lengthy process in the field ?.. Mind you I spose you are unlikely to wear the edge off your knife while out if it's sharp to start with ?. I have a set of stones that were used for sharpening plane blades, good big flat stones that give a greay edge, don't always go as fine as the Arkansas as I find a fine grit stone normally does the job. I take a filleting knife with me when ferreting as it's light, sharp and ideal for gutting before bringing the bunnies home.
Guest Mr Pieman
I use a 4 stone Lansky set. Simplicity itself to use. Carry it in my stalking bag and it only takes a couple of minutes to revive a really blunt edge on a knife. PP
game_boy
I've just ordered one of the those pocket Gerber sharpeners for £4. So hopefully it will do the biz. Been on the look out for a while now for a decent knife sharpener. From the reviews its got on here is should be good. Tried a a sharpening stone, kitchen steel all sorts. Have even used a smoothed river peeble when out in the field on occasions! cheers, gb. P.S. Does anyone know how long it will last ??
