Blunderbuss
Apologies if this has been asked before, I did search but couldn't find answers to my specific questions. I have newbie paranoia about seeing my post listed in the 'repetetive threads' thread! Anyhow, I'm just getting into sporting clays and loving it, but have loads to learn. When I bought my gun I bought some Eley blues 28g fibre and after they'd gone I started buying some Fiochi stuff from the clay ground, I'm not sure if they were 24g or 28g. TBH I couldn't really tell the difference between the Eleys and Fiochi. I want to buy a 1000 to get a good price from Just Cartridges or somewhere like that, but am unsure what to buy. They must be fibre wad for the ground I use. Now the questions: Are there 'rules' on max shot load for sporting? If so is it 24g, 28g or more? Is there much performance difference between 24g and 28g? Is there much difference in recoil? I fired 200 carts from a fairly light game gun today and am really feeling it now. What is the recomended shot size? I think I've been using 7.5 but didn't really check TBH Taking all the above into consideration, what would be a reasonable quality, competetively priced cartridge for informal sporting clays, but which would be 'legal' if I fancied embarrasing myself at a local comp? Cheers Edited April 19, 2009 by Blunderbuss

Cheers Hi Dave, I think the max load for a CPSA reg ESP shoot is 28g I doubt you'd notice any difference between 24g and 28g on most targets. There is a slight difference in felt recoil, but that depends on the cartridge you're using. Some 28g shells i've used are very smooth compared to some 24g shells i've put through my gun. 7.5 or 8 shot will cope with pretty much most things you'll come up against, and if you have to use fibre i don't think you'll go far wrong with something like Eley Firsts. A decent cartridge and a good price. (£137.50/1000 at Just Cartridges) It's a couple of quid more for 28g. I would think you could mix and have 500 7.5's and 500 8's for the same price. Hope this helps
CZ550Kevlar
Ok here goes nothing. 1 - "Rules" depends on the ground a standard max is 28g for all grounds very rare to find a ground with less. 2 - Not actually much difference in 24g and 28g loads, there is no reason why you can`t "Learn" to use 24g loads (Lead etc), in actual fact it has been known for the 24g load to give a tighter pattern and the same velocity as a 28g. 3 - Recoil on a 24g is much easier on the shoulder than a 28g, don`t forget also that as you are using fibre wads these feel more potent than plastic wads. If you want to use 28g or even if 24g feels tough then buy a reacta pad that fits onto your butt, doesn`t change your fit and saves alot of hurting, it could be gun fit making you ache but alot of the time some people just don`t get on with 28g. 4 - 7.5 is a good standard sometimes people go for 8 but it depends on the flavour of cartridge used as some only make 7 or 8 some come just in 7.5 Hope that helps abit. I would say go for Gamebore Kent Velocity clay cartridge curently approx £130 / 1000

Raja Clavata
Another vote for Eley firsts 28 gram in 7.5's - if you ever get good enough to suspect that they are costing you the odd bird then perhaps consider moving on to something more expensive. I started on 21gram Hull comp X, they were OK to begin with but it became obvious after a while that they were costing me the odd bird. Moving up the to the 28's proved that (although I'm still ****).
poontang
Dave, Just to chuck another thing into the pot. It's always a good idea to have some no.9 shot cartridges with you for closer targets. They'll easily do the business up to 30 yards, and you'll have almost twice as much lead in the air as a 7.5 shell.
