stevethevanman
I went out today zeroing the HMR, and was getting approximately 0.5" groups at 50yds (it seems to love hornady 17gr V-Max)...not hard with a HMR I know. :( I set up some bottles filled with water at 90...110 and 125yds. I was hitting them, the bullet was dropping withing 1-1.5" drop of point of aim By this time im thinking WOW...what a flat caliber, so I went walkabout and came accross a rabbit, looking at how flat the round was I aimed and fired, number one in the bag at 78yds . I moved on again and I saw one down about 150yds away im the bottom of the field, but there was shin high grass everywere, and at all times a peice of it was always one blocking my view off the bipod bipod ...so I crept forward 30yds to where there was a rise in the ground, then the rabbit ran in :( ...but there was one just to the left of it but with its back to me in the hedge....bang pop, and number 2 was in the bag at a respectible 123yds Then, as I was having a sit down, another came out in the bottom curve of the field, he was munching grass for about 5mins as I was looking through the scope. Then after no amount of squeeks would get him up, a branch moved and he stood up on his back legs, aimed at the neck and the bullet hit about 2" low so...a shoulder shot even though POA was neck, this was my furthest confirmed kill with a rimfire at 150yds . Well after today I truly am a HMR fan, :( .the 22lr just cannot compete with its flattness....also do not fret I have a picture of the first one comming Steve Edited May 2, 2009 by stevethevanman

Bleeh
Just wait intill they all learn the sound of your .17, - that's it's main flaw.
Dead-Eyed Duck
Any decent hmr will give 0.75" at 100 yards - which is a nice headshot. Beyond this you are pushing it for a headshot - which is OK if you do not want to eat the rabbits and it is a simple rabbit control job. However, never underestimate the 0.22 rimmy which is good up to 75 yards for a fairly easy headshot (allowing for c.2.5" bullet drop if zeroed at 50 yards). The beauty of the 0.22 is the silence of the beast - I always try and disturb the countryside as little as I can. Having said that the hmr has it's place.
