Baldrick
Keep the barrel as long as possible with a .270 (mine has a 24" barrel). A short barrel will be lighter, not helping with the perceived recoil, and it will not allow the bullet to reach an optimum muzzle velocity. The muzzle blast off a short-barreled .270 is pretty fierce too.
Crouch valley
thanks for your advice the pro hunter has a 23.5" barel and the mountain has a 20" barrel i wil be useing a t8 mod will this help
Baldrick
Have you already got the T8? Any moderator will help dampen recoil and muzzle blast. I would go for the Pro Hunter, as you need that additional length to extract all of the potential from the .270, i.e. it's high velocity and flat trajectory. moses
As Baldrick says; you want at least a 23" barrel on a .
Crouch valley
thanks baldrick and no i have not bought the t8 yet
Baldrick
OK. Don't buy a T8. Only a small proportion of T8 owners have had what could be considered a good working life from their T8s. I would not buy one again. Your money is far better spent on a stainless steel moderator, such as ASE's Utra North Star, S5 or Jet-Z Compact models. Doubtless some people will also recommend the Wildcat Predator 8 mod. There is a thread on the BBS at present, written by sanders89 (Jerry), who has had his T8 for only about 2 years, and the rust has eaten through the wall of the T8. Crouch valley
thanks mate i will have a look at them but i have had a t8 for five years on my 243 and it is only just starting to show sighns of rust maybe the new t8s are not as good as the old ones
Baldrick
Fair play to you. I have had two within the last two years, and one degraded quickly. The other did admittedly last much better. The T8s are very effective mods, but I think there's pretty compelling evidence to buy more resilient offerings from PES and ASE Utra. njc110381
In .270 the long barrel is far better. It is a fairly large cased round so will burn powder for some time. A short barrel will really waste the potential of the round. Not accuracy wise, but you will lose velocity and gain a good amount of muzzle blast! I second the T8 comment. They were designed to be disposable! I have a Predator 8 which weighs about the same, is the same size, but is strippable for cleaning. I would never buy a non strippable mod if it wasn't stainless steel!
jammiedodger
If you`re dead set on a T8 I think border barrels are doing a stainless copy of them, just a thought
bennyblanco
The other problem with the mountain is that very few over barrel mods will be short enough, I had to have a T8ar on mine as even the T4 was too long. I love my steyr although a walnut stock would be nice, if you need to adjust the non set trigger here is the info i have now worked out how to do all the trigger adjustments on the normal non-set trigger position. it is now very sweet http://marksgallery.photoblog.me.uk/p29866360.html if you remove the bolt and turn screw "B" (1.5mm allen key) anti clockwise you lower the trigger pull, don't go silly but you can get a very light release, consequently you get a bit of creep. screw "A" is covered with a rubber grommit which can be pulled with a big needle, it is a flat headed screw and if you turn it clockwise you lessen the sear contact. you can check how much overlap there is by putting in the bolt and cocking the gun as there is a window on the side to see the sear engagement. i now have a fairly light creep free trigger + the exceptional set trigger
