Beginning of the new season

Recommended Posts

In some parts of the Netherlands the roebuck season starts 1st april, sometimes the 1st of may. Do not know why there is a regional difference, strange.

Nevertheless, i was out the 1st of may at the permission of a friend of mine. We are old college mates. He also invited another old mate.

The first evening we decided to sit at high seats at his permission. It is a large wood surrounded by farmland and marshes. It is about 900 hectares and ideal roecountry. In a evening you can spot around 70 :) roe coming out the woods. I saw about 15 coming out that evening, some of them bucks but to far to get a shot out. Nobody shot a buck that evening and we where quite amazed that not one of us bagged a buck ( because normally we should have, never mind). At the little hunting lodge in the middle of the wood we sat around the campfire having a bbq and drank beer and wine, telling each other old stories till 2 o'clock. If you get older you tend to talk more about the good old times...

Next morning got up at 5, but it was already bright. We all decided to have a stalk in stead of sitting on a high seat. I soon discovered a pointer buck still in velvet. Had a heap of logs for a gunrest and dropped the buck at 70 meters. My friend told me to try and get another one, he would pick up the buck by car. I then saw another buck very close by at 15 meters. Not knowingly i had sneaked upon him. The buck was as suprised as i was. To my luck it froze and i was able to get a shot out. Again dropped on the spot, this time a 2 pointer.

It turned out the other friend got very lucky with an old buck that he stalked in the woodland. Judging from its size and body it is over 5 years and has a nice head.

With the cleaning of the heads it turned out that my 4pointer buck had about 50 "larvea" (big and small) in it's throat. I know this can happen, seen it before but never seen that many. I wonder if the roebuck could breathe poperly. :)

Put in another picture of the old buck. My guess is 6 years old according to the behaviour, build, teeth and antlers..
