shoughton
Popped out last night and put some pigeons up out of a tree - they circled out over the rape heading back to their flight line. I managed to get a left and right - clouds of feathers and they both fell stone dead into the rape. I marked their positions using markers on the horizon and then set off using tram lines through the field to get as near as possible without damaging the crop. Could I find them? Could I hell! I couldn't even find a feather. I thought I'd marked their position well, but I have to confess that by the time I was out 10 yards into the rape I was totally disorientated!! I spent a good 45 mins searching but not even a feather found - I must have been miles off. The rape here is now far too tall and far too dense to shoot over. Probably obvious to experienced shooters but this is my first year with a shotgun and I have much to learn. I won't be trying that again unless I have a good dog with me. I just hope I didn't cause any crop damage ( Looking forward to the rape being cut! Steve
foggy11
Think they might be a little smelly by then.....
Lancs Lad
Hint........stay out of the rape when it starts to seed......and dont send a dog through it....... you will do more damage that the birds will traming through and knocking all the seed off........ MerseaDavid
We always loose birds in the crops at this time of year because they are too tall and dense but we still shoot the birds even if we cant pick them up because we are they to stop the birds from eating the crops. But as said dont bother trying to collect them because you probably wont find them + you will cause more damage trying to find them than what most pigeons will at the moment. shoughton
Yep - all understood. Thanks for the comments. I'm sure the pigeons won't go to waste anyway - there's always natural recycling going on! Thanks again.
