Hi there normally I shoot rabbits but over the land where I shoot there is a wooded area between two fields and there are quite a few pigeons flying over the trees etc is it possible to decoy and shoot them with a 22 rim fire when they land from a hide or is a shotgun the only way I have a shotgun but if I could kill two birds with one stone so to say.

or is the idea to take the bird as it lands :o

normally you shoot them as they come to land, just as they open up their wings to land,

its not uncommon for them to land, but sometimes if your decoys dont convince them enough they wont land, and peel off at the last min, i would imagine with full bodied decoys this would be better, ive only used shells on the few times ive been decoying

It is far more sporting to shoot them as they fly in with a shotgun. Its also very challenging! Plus its much safter than using a .22, you should never shoot a firearm unless you have a suitable back drop. If i ever go out and shoot squirrels with a .22, I wait till they are on the ground.

I cant see any good reason not to shoot them on the ground (if you can get them to land) with a rimmy, but DON'T fire when they are in the air!!

I assume there are a few backstops as you are already shooting bunnies, just try to set up so that you face a backstop when they land.

I only shoot pigeon with a shotgun and only shoot them in the air , that's sporting and pest controll.

If you want to shoot them with a 22 on the ground then that's ok if it's safe, that's pest controll.

I think you would have a better day with the shotgun m8.

That's my opinion.

Varmintator - I have tried to decoy crows and shoot them with a .22LR and to date have had no success. they came in but would not land (sheep feeding area in a field). Maybe if using a feeding type coy, the moving type, it may work.

I think in future I will take my 12g or 410 and leave the .22 at the back of the hide. If the shooting is good and some are looking like landing, and I have got the killing bug out of my system, then use the .22.

I have had lots of experiences where they have landed when coying over barley. Landing even as we were shooting. May be a flight/feed line thing.

:D
