Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council wrote to tenants at its 30,000 properties, requiring owners of licensed guns to request written permission from the authority to keep firearms at their premises.

After obtaining feedback from police, shooting organisations and its members, the council decided to withdraw its request.

The danger of keeping a database identifying where firearm owners live was one of the reasons for the change in decision.

Sandwell Metropolitan Council's cabinet member for neighbourhoods and housing, Councillor Mahboob Hussain, said: "We have had significant feedback on this issue and so far it is clear that there is very little support for this suggestion.

"The verdict from our consultation with our tenants and the police is that we should not pursue this particular proposal."

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: "Data concerning the storing of legally held, licensed firearms is already held by the police on a secure database, the National Firearms Licensing Management System."

The council's about-turn was welcomed by the British Association for Shooting and Conservation's director of communications, Christopher Graffius. He said: "The police make thorough checks before issuing licences, and also check that firearms are being securely stored in accordance with the law.

"Those engaged in shooting sports are law-abiding and responsible.

"The council is to be congratulated for listening to their tenants and making a common sense decision."

I do know that two of the local housing associations refuse to allow permission for tenants at their properties for cabinet's to be mounted in the property which by virtue prevents you owning a firearm..... Something to do with the guise that it is a permanent fixture by being securely bolted to the wall.

I do believe it has been contested by several people who are tenants and the result is a blind eye is turned to those that do.
