Ozzy Fudd
Ive just got a new permission, and no other way to describe it - its awesome!! you might have seen some of the posts lately about my uncle asking me to clear his field out of rabbits, so for the last 2 months weve been hitting it and the adjoining fields to it for the rabbits. my uncle only owns one of the fields, the rest belong to a farmer that he's known for years and is very close to. theyre heaving with rabbits too and the farmer asked us to clear them out while were doing my uncles. i wouldnt say theyre totally cleared but ive taken about 30 rabbits myself, and my mates have got maybe the same again, so theyre both happy with us - happy enough for the farmer to tell my uncle for us to sort out a few fields in front of his house that are in a small river valley. we took a quick look on wednesday night and shot a rabbit with the .223 - as soon as the shot was fired the sky came alive, i reckon there was about 30 crows and a dozen woodies roosting in the trees beside the river, happy days!! yesterday i got bored and hit my uncles field again, got about 5 rabbits before my mate richie showed up, by this stage someone (farm hand) was in the process of spreading muck on the fields so thought we'd head over to the river beside the house. decided to call at the house first to let them know we were there, the farmer wasnt about but his son was, so i introduced myself and explained what we were at. he said no problem, you can hit down there if you want, of theres another few fields over behind the chicken houses that are lousy with rabbits. at this point my face is about to split ive got such a big grin then he says but if you can id like you to head up to the old farm, its black with crows at the mo. i got to admit i wasnt as happy at this, firstly we were in rabbit shooting set up, only a cartridge belt each, tight chokes in guns, etc, and you know when a farmer says its black with crows he probably means he's seen 3 in the last week. but i thought id better keep him happy, so got the directions to the yard (which is in the **** end of nowhere) and set off, only had to ask for directions once... but once we got there the yard is amazing! 95% of the land around here is for grazing, but theres about 70 acres right around the yard thats just been sown with wheat/barley. theres also a long cattle shed that crows flock into, as soon as i walked in the door about 20 crows burst out at me, and all evening they kept coming into the yard; theres a gas bird scarer running beside the barns, but the crows have got used to it (we havnt tho, keeps scaring the **** clean outta me) so the sound of our shots doesnt scare them away we ended up with a dozen crows and ran out of cartridges, not too bad all considering, so next saturday were going in to do the job properly - decoys, camo netting for a hide and at least a cartons worth of cartridges - oh and im taking the tight choke out of the gun believe me!! so all in all i reckon weve got maybe 500 acres to shoot over, ranging from farm yards, a small river valley, and both dairy and arable land - defo landed on my feet on with this one
