Fisherman Mike
FM, Rock Doves are NOT a seperate species!! They are a seperate race of the same species as the Feral Pigeon. For instance: there are two races of Greylag Geese, the Eastern(Siberian) and Western (Icelandic) I suspect that many years ago a pair of Rock Doves were captured from the wild and bread to produce the first of what are now Feral Pigeons. Mark. Ok I agree then they are a sub-species but thats splitting hairs. Go to one of the Western or Northern Isles and shoot a couple of "Wild Ferals" and see how long it is before the plod beat a path to your door :o :o Which cames first the Rocks or the Ferals ? i woul;d say and so would many Ornithologists the Rocks so Then we could say that the Rocks are a seperate species of the same order and it is the Ferals who are the sub species.... digger
i find what i call stock doves/blue rocks are easy to spot due to the fact their flight and approach to decoys are different to those of wood pigeons.they fly with a much faster wing beat and when together fly closer to each other than woodies. when they come in to my pattern i use them as dry firing practice.imho no decoyer worth his salt could mistake one for the other.simply and contensiously (sp) put, know what you raise your gun at or stay at home until you do. Axel
If the incoming pigeon has white bars on its neck and wings, shoot it. If it hasnt, leave it alone. An interesting debate but time to move on I suspect. (General comment, not aimed at anybody in particular). I spotted a field of peas covered in pigeons yesterday on my way back from the gunsmith, tracked the farmer down and got permission, so Sat am I'll be out hitting the little ******* with the white bits! Good shotting! Axel
