old rooster
Won't bore you with a long story (just for once) FM will understand this one: Been searching for a Bob Church "Alaskan" fly rod on Ebay for some time, one went recently for about 60 squid so imagine my joy at picking one up on Ebay for £35 the other day !!!!!!!!!! Paid with PayPal and first thing this morning the rod duly arrived in a plastic tube, wrapped in bubble wrap inside its cloth bag. Pulled it all out with a silly grin on my moosh until I realised that there was rather too much flexibility in the mid section of the bag. Opened it up and sure enough out fell 4 pieces of what should have been a 2 piece rod. BL**DY ROYAL MAIL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Jonnyni
Did you have any insurance on the postage? If so what happens next
old rooster
Hoping the seller insured the package, it went recorded delivery so I'm not sure how much that covers without seperate insureance ?. Probably sod all. In the meantime I can have a good old sulk I suppose :<
The_Craws
Maybe it was already broken and your blaming the poor old royal mail.

old rooster
Maybe it was already broken and your blaming the poor old royal mail. Yeah right !!!!. My GF works at "poor old royal mail" and tells me of the horrendous way in which items are chucked about in transit. Both joints of the rod snapped clean in two right in the middle, wouldn't mind betting it got a good stamping on or something heavy dropped on it. Maybe slammed in a van door. Blo*dy shame as it was otherwise in very tidy condition. "You paid by paypal, covered by standard purchase protection" Any advice on who I should claim from DM ?? donkeymagic
Ill post it on here rather than p.m. it, for the benefit of anybody else that may have similar problems in the future. Contact the seller and tell them the problem. The seller will have Recorded Delivery slip so its they who will have to make the claim. You may find that the seller refunds you instantly as it is they who will have to chase the Royal Mail. Alternativley you could go to paypal. It will involve having to file a claim with them, pretty straight forward. Id advise you to contact the seller. Both you and the seller are protected by paypal as the seller sent the item via recorded. I think paypal call it 'buyer protection' Alternativley you should be covered by ebay standard purchase protection, im not that well versed on that though. Id say contact the seller and see what they say. If the seller wont play ball then go to paypal. The RM will only cover you for £28.00 so paypal may be your best bet anyway. p.m. me if you need anything else.
pete evans
whats the spec of the alaskan? why the quest for this specific rod?
old rooster
Thanks DM, will give it a go and see what happens, will let you all know the outcome out of interest. Pete: the Alaskan is an AFTM 7-9 rated rod and I've already got a couple of Bob Churchs rods which I find great for the heavy use I put them to. Do a fair bit of sinking line fishing from the boat, lot of it on the rudder so they need to be pretty meaty. Just got another "Rutland MK 2 X weave" off ebay but it remains to be seen whether it can survive the post, they work well with Hi D shooting heads, I've been using one for a number of years now and its accounted for some hefty old rainbows in its time !!. IMHO they are a lot of rod for the money, some of the high price rods are just a **** take as there are only so many people producing blanks. I make my own rods anyway but find it's cheaper to pick up good second hand ones if they are available. Made a 12 weight 10 footer and aluminium reel a few years ago for chucking lead core shooting heads, talk about hard work !!, use Cortland Kerbooms for this but you don't want to be clouted round the head too often while casting with them. pete evans
i heard these rods were quite good for that style of work. never done that much of it myself. ive built a fair few rods in my time mostly on sage reject blanks (varnish runs microscopically bent tips etc) but i no longer have the source. im looking at getting a saltwater rod together for australia, flats fishing for large travally and boat fishing for tuna in the 15 -20 lbs range. im thinking 9' or 9'6" 10 or 12 wt. not sure on getting a blank designed for the task or one of these rods you describe that are designed to chuck big dense shooting heads. what do you think? pete

I've used it before with shooting heads off the bank for back end rainbows feeding on dead fry downwind. It tears your arm up a bit but the distances you can get with a bit of a breeze from behind are phenomenal !!! You're welcome to have a try of it before you decide what to make up for your trip. I'm going to New Zealand next year for a couple of months and hope to do some Trout fishing on Taupo and the feeder rivers. It's a ****ty life but someone has to do it to keep the tourist trade alive

pete evans
i had a video about fishing taupo and the tongarera fot the famous tongarera torpedos. pity i havnt got it any more it was a cracker, it was part of the wildfish series which is an ausie production worth watching if you can get a hold of it. i may take you up on your offer, i fish in oxford mainly but sometimes go to eyebrook rutland pitsford bewl etc. i have never fished for trout in nz but have fished for them in auz. forget the small flies as everything i tied on was met with the remark "jeez its a bit small isnt it" this is a fairly average bag of wild aussie brownies. taken from arthurs lake tasmania in a float tube. pete
old rooster
Nice kippers mate !!!. I've had a few 'Bows from the picket line on Taupo when we visited some years back, caught them on gold heads with a floating line and long leader. Put them all back as they were out of condition after spawning and a bit "slabby" as one Maori angler I spoke to put it. Great country to be in if you are into Field Sports. Once took a boat and guide for a day, he was from Scotland and hade moved over there to enjoy a less restricted lifestyle. Had plenty of time to chat with him while harling for the day and we discussed shooting, fishing and all manner of things. Asked him where it was possible to shoot and he cast his arm in a wide sweep around him saying "there". He quickly followed that up with "But you must go to the post office and get a licence". "How much do they cost" I asked. He rolled about laughing, "you have to have the licence but you don't PAY for it". Was only thinking the other day about taking a trip to Eyebrook, lovely little natural looking reservoir, can't say I've enjoyed the likes of Farmoor to be honest and Pitsford has lost its appeal due to the hordes of cyclists and walkers that now circle the water all day long. You are welcome to try the old arm knackerer if you are over this way, we could take it down the field near my house and try it with a selection of lines I've made up for it. old rooster
Well it's over a month down the road, two claim forms, umpteen emails and diddly squat to show for it. Apparently "my claim is being considered", so which part of "my fishing rod was totally ******** while in transit via an insured postal service, due to your companies incompetence" are they struggling with I ain't giving up, they have to pay up and look big, wonder if I should start adding statutory interest due to late payment
